Some people have been posting the word "lurk" (or something similar) in threads that they want to keep an eye on. Then they use the "new replies to your posts" button to check if that thread has gotten any new replies. This is clever and I understand why people do it! But now that the Bookmarks feature is here, everyone should use Bookmarks instead to keep track of threads you want to watch.

Past and future "lurk" posts are going to be deleted by mods. This will begin on Dec 26 so if you are lurking in any threads, add those threads to your Bookmarks soon!

The reason why we need to prevent "lurk" posts is:

a. they make threads unecessarily long and harder to sift through

b. they add uncessary bulk to Craftster's database filling up disk space, adding to the monthly bandwidth usage, making searches and backups slower, etc

Thanks everyone!

Leah

Woo - bookmarks are up & running - thanks Leah!  Between that and Notify it's going to be easy to keep track of all the great things on craftster.

it might be a good idea for swap organizers to post a message about this in their threads where people have been lurking, just in case they miss it here.

I've been using the bookmarks for 2 days now, and I'm not sure I like them for keeping updated on new posts. They are great to move the 800 craftster bookmarks from my favorites list, but I only want to check on certain threads when there is something new posted. I do use the notify, but that only shows up on my email.
Maybe it's just me or I'm doing something wrong, cuz I only found out how to label my PMs today, after being a member for three months. *duh* And yes, if I want to stay on top of things I should post more than "lurk". And yes, Craftster can't be all things to all people, but I was just wondering what others were thinking on this subject.

(I feel so guilty for even mentioning it, because I love this website soooooo much  Grin  )

i know this question doesnt really pertain to the lurking but.....here goes anyhoo!

is there some magic easy way of making it so that a thread you have posted on in the past doesnt come up in your new replies anymore.
i commented once in the tattoo thread and now i am kinda sick of having to look at it to get it to go away!

i know i can go through and delete posts but that would take forever...but if i have to i will!  just curious if there is a better way!

I wish there were a way, too--the Panta thread is my "tattoo" thread.  Someone suggested one that there be an "unsubscribe" feature, but so far, nothing.

I just click the "Mark all as read" button; it's easier than having to look at all the posts in threads that I don't necessarily have an interest in anymore. :/

Well, that's what the bookmark feature is useful for also. I've bookmarked the threads that I commented in *and* that I want to keep watching (as well as ones I haven't commented in and want to watch) and now I check that first thing when I visit Craftster instead of the "show new replies". I know it's kind of a pain to go back and bookmark everything you want to watch, but I can attest that it's a lot nicer once it's set up.

Maybe go to the original thread and delete your post(s)? If you're not interested in a particular thread, you could just remove your posting and you wont get alerted anymore??  Has anyone tried this? It's probably kind of annoying and dissapointing to delete your post, but it probably would solve the "show new replies to my posts" thing..
I removed my posts on the "lose weight along" post because it just went crazy-long, and I decided to stay chubby until after the holidays.  Cheesy I went into my profile and then into my recent posts and deleted them there. It was faster than going thru the long-long thread.

i also *love* the bookmark feature - one question though....is there any way to confirm that something has indeed been bookmarked? i often have a number of tabs open, and i might hit bookmark, then switch over to another tab in the meantime, and when i come back, i have no way of knowing if it got bookmarked for sure without checking my "bookmarks" list. perhaps once something is indeed bookmarked, it could say "unbookmark", so that way you know that it's already been marked? a minor point, i realize, but i just thought i'd put it out there. however, i would like to emphasize how much i realllly do like this new feature! thanks leah!

Nope. Feel free to compliment all you want!!

I'm just talking about the posting of the word "lurk" that some people were doing so that that thread would show up in their "uread replies"

Pardon me for being an idiot, but...  where is the bookmark feature?  Do you need to be using IE to utilize it?

EDIT

[hmmmmm] I just switched to IE and there it is.  Is this feature available with Mozilla?  Or is this another reason to bitch about the complete dominance of crappy Microsoft products?

EDIT

ok, now I'm really freekin confused.  I just logged into Craftster using IE, and suddenly the bookmark feature disappeared and everything looks like it looks in Mozilla.  Am I drunk and seeing things?  No, it's a Monday night and I have to work in twelve hours.  Am I crazy?  Eh...  probably.

What gives?

i use mozilla myself and have never had a problem with the bookmark feature. it sometimes takes a few seconds for it to load, but it's always there alongside all the other buttons. sorry i can't be more helpful, but i just thought i'd let you know that it's not a mozilla-related problem.

hope it works out for ya! Smiley

Instead of posting in a thread just so you can see it when you click 'Show New replies to your posts'
you click the bookmark button, so there isn't a bunch of posts in a thread that just say 'lurk'
