My friend just got back from Ireland and brought me 300 grams of some gorgeous cream aran-weight wool as a present. Problem is-- I can't figure out what to do with it! I don't want to do yet another hat, or scarf, or if I do I want them to be something special-- he's pretty much breathing down my back to see what I can make of this. I'm not the most advanced of knitters, but would be willing to give things a try, if someone has any ideas for interesting (and preferably free) patterns that I could look at.

Something with cables or an interesting stitch texture might look nice with that type of wool.

I think this stitch pattern is very fun. http://wolfandturtle.net/Yarnpath/index.php/Yarnpath/comments/the_dulann_scarf/   Someone at knitter's review made socks, a hat, wrist warmers, and the scarf using it. You could even do leg warmers!

Maybe check out a book with different aran patterns and design your own item...

Me likey! I've been wanting to make one of those cabled handbags, but haven't been able to decide on a cable or two...I think this one is a strong contender.  Thanks, tejer, for posting this here.
