fabric flower brooch (with tutorial!)

i really like the pins on this site so i decided to make one of my own. no pinking shears, but i think it turned out ok.

first, get your fabric. i used black felt and a scrap of an old scarf i had lying around. the whole project used only about 2"x10" of each kind of fabric total, so they're great to use up scraps.


cut your fabric into petal shapes. i used 6 petals for this particular flower (so 6 of each kind of fabric), and each one is about 1.25" long, just kind of a fat oval shape. the felt is a little bit bigger than the scarf fabric.


pin the petal layers together.


sew 'em up! i have no machine, so i handsewed them. they're pretty small anyway, so it didn't take too long.


put your petals together and sew them. it was kinda tricky to get it together, but it ended up ok.


stick a pin back on it.


fancy button in the middle and you're done!


this was my first tutorial so i hope it makes sense!

Wow, I've been playing with some scrap flower pins for a while now, and I never would have thought to do it that way.  Good job, I'm gonna have to try that now.

I have a TON of scraps in random colors.. and I like to hand sew little things so I will have to try and make some!

(edit) I made one! Mine only has 5 petals cause I forgot everything you wrote in the tutorial BUT I love it!!!! Thanks for the awesome tutorial!!

only I used all felt and put a bit of wire between the two layers so it would be a little bendable, if that makes sense.

how did you sew all the petals together? do you just try to hold them all in place and then stitch a bit in the middle? how did you get the petals to stay remotely together while you stitched them all together?

it was kind of awkward to work with the petals while sewing them together, but what i did was fold them all in half so they're sort of pinched together, stacked them up, and ran a piece of thread through all of them at once and then back around itself, in a circle, just to hold them all together. then i straightened them out and sewed them more nicely.

if that's confusing, let me know and i can make a little paint illustration and post that. or if anybody has an easier way, let me know!
