Does anyone know where I can find instructions on how to make a harness for my rat? I love to take her places, but am afraid that without one I'm going to lose her.

The lady at the pet store said that they hated the store bought ones, but that she knew someone who found how to make one out of yarn, online.

I can crochet, but not knit.

chain stitch a long cord?

I have a kitten harness & I'll look at it's construction.
it's just one long cord and I'm sure you could duplicate it for your rat.

I had an old blue kitty harness and it was pretty basic (now that I think of it)

the leash was attached to a small loop

in the small loop was another freestanding loop twisted into a figure 8
one hole for their neck
one hole for their tummy

does that make sense? I don't know if it's the same as the ones they don't like, because mine was storebought. well, I hope I helped, good luck!!

Um, won't she chew through yarn?

There is some type of harness I've heard discussed on ratlist (the yahoo group) but I don't remember what it was called. I think it was a sort of figure-8 type harness.

you can get nylon thread from hobby lobby (and some other places probably, I just know for sure they have it there) and most leashes and harnesses are made from that, I don't think it would get chewed through. The nylon is near where all the yarn is, you might have to hunt for it a little or ask someone. It's actually more nylon cord than thread, a friend of mine uses it to macrame.

Here's my store-bought figure-eight leash. My girls really don't seem to mind it. I've had some others that hate it. I think it depends on the rat.

Here is a site that has instructions to make a rat harness.

I have never done it but knew that it was there.

The only problem I have run into with harness (store bought) is that my rats can get out of them very easily........let me know if anyone comes up with a design that will keep them in it.
