Ideas for clocks?

So being the brilliant planner that I am...I decided on clocks for christmas presents this year. I bought a bunch of the workings but now I am stuck as far as what to make into a clock. Anyone have any ideas for cool reworkings/repurposing? I did the record bowl thing last year so I don't really want to use records. But since I am stumped I welcome any ideas.

How about plates?  You can get them at thrift stores for next to nothing.  I'm not sure what you'd use to cut out the hole you'd need for the clock works, but I'm sure someone craftier than me would know about that.  You could get ceramic or wooden numbers to glue on.

I'm using one of those cool-shaped papier mache boxes you can get for like, 2 bucks or something closely as inexpensive.  i'm drilling a hole in the top and bottom of the box, lining them up, then putting the lid on the bottom so you can get to the workings still.  It looks pretty cute so far

I saw a really cool clock once. It didn't have the usual frame or anything that the numbers were put on. All it was were the numbers (all separate from each other) and the hour, minute and second hands which ran on a small battery. The owner of this clock could arrange the numbers however they wished by placing them directly onto the wall (I think they had a sticky backing) and the battery-operated hands were placed somewhere in the middle where it could tell the correct time.

i saw some where that you could use cd's they are a nice size, the ones i saw were embelishied with lots of paper decoupage and beads and gold snippets. then they were displayed on those plate and saucer stands. they were completely covered on the face side so the only way to tell it's a cd is by looking at the back or by someone telling you.

it's been on my list  of things to do for months now, i just haven't gotten around to it.

What about boxes--mac 'n' cheese, or the giftee's favorite cereal, or a cool design from the international foods aisle.

Use the whole box, or cut out and mount one side and put it in a frame.
