I used spray paint (regular or hammered... different effect), and used a clear sealant (?? the clear spray paint) so the paint didn't flake or chip, and mine turned out fine.  That should help with your super-quick project deadline.  Grin

I've only done two stencils on records and neither of them had a backround color other than the black of the record.  I cut the stencils out of Manila folders and just used white spraypaint, they turned out fine I think.  One thing that messed me up though was the first time I had no spray adhesive so the stencil lifted up from the air comming out of the spray paint can.  Spraying from higher up or using spray adhesive seemed to fix this though.  Didn't really know what your questions meant so sorry if I miss interpreted one of them.

I used clear contact paper for my stencils and spray paint for my record clocks.
Oh, and I finished with clear sealant spray paint.

yeah, i just used the record for the background color.  kinda keeps the feel, if that makes any sense.  maybe you could have the paint color go with the label?  i usually stick with really vibrant colors (reds, blues, etc.) and keep it simple (2-3 layer stencil max), but who knows?  and there are plenty of 10 cent records out there to practice on...  Smiley
