Felt along no.1 - Felt covered soap Gallery
«
on:

This is the gallery for our first wet felt along!
(can you tell I'm excited? Hurrah!)
Details + tutorial for the December felt-along are in the below link
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=66051.0
If you have any questions or queries about this wet felt along project, feel free to post them in the discussion thread as linked above.
Otherwise, show us your soap!
(edited by Jane Doe to add felt-along info)
Here are my shots:
I am out of roving.
No more needle felting or soap felting. What is a girl to do?

Ok I must admit the first time I heard of felted soap I thought "who are these crazies that think rubbing wet wool on their bodies is a good idea?" I am now addicted. I just finished my first and I see many more in my future. I think this one may get wrapped up with a handknit facecloth as a Christmas/Chanukah gift for my boyfriend's sister.

Snacker and Craftykate - your soaps are lovely. The ones by me aren't quite so nice, but will share them anyway. Told all about my trials and troubles over in the felt a long so won't repeat.
Did add fancy detail of flower to one round rose scented soap by needle felting a flower on top.

In mine: the white one, the stipes are not adhering well to the white underlayer. The acid green one is a bit flopy and part of the lavender fell off. The one pink and the little blue one seem OK and stable. The yellow one felted ok with the one color but is awfully boring.
Crafty Kate, I love how you are going to package a covered soap with the hand knit wash cloth too.

Three more drying with my original one. My whole apartment smells like almond and sandalwood now. Mmmm...
GraceOblivious I hope you don't mind that I completely stole your flower idea. Yours is way cuter though. I made mine too big.

craftykate, I love the colors you're using. The blues + greens look very oceanic + the green looks like sea weed.
GraceOblivious - you're starting to see the difficult part of wet felting. Its isn't easy to always keep everything in the right place until it starts to shrink and bind. (btw I like the addition of the needle-felt flower )
Another method I've seen used with wet-felting is to wrap the item in panty hose, and then peel the hose off the finished product. In this case, I guess one could "cheat" by wrapping the soap in fibre, then putting it in the toe of pantyhose. Felt like crazy and then peel off the hose?
I used a large bar of lavender soap cut in half to make these two matching felty soaps
(of course, using light purple wool
)
Heh, I love that they stand up along the edge that I cut them. They look so perky.
Here's a pic of them lying down so you can see how they were cut from the large bar of soap

Ok, so I tried it today, and boy do you guys make it sound easier than it actually is!
I am not sure if it was finished felting when I stopped, but everything had stopping moving around on the soap, although it seems a little fuzzy still. It's a little lopsided as well and there are a couple corners that still show through
The wool is so soft though, so I really like that... and I think I will have to see how it holds up!

Here are my first attempts , the bar on the left is covered completely , the bar on the right is only covered in the middle , while the soap was still wet I pierced a hole using a knitting needle and then attached a ribbon so the soap can be hung up.

lol , thanks grace .
I had trouble with the roving slipping on the completely covered one , it also 'felt' ( sigh bad puns) like i had way too much roving on there and had to trim some back whilst I was rubbing it to take alot of it off.
With the partically wrapped way , you dont get that as much , becareful if you do pierce the soap though I can see people getting stabbed as the soap is slippery , and needles can be pretty sharp , maybe wearing a rubber glove would be best and holding the soap onto a hard surface.

wow! they all look fantastic!
my only question is, did anybody use a felting board/washboard.
just wondering if it's worth it to get one or to just do it without...
