Ok - I'm a bit farther back.  I've completed my Section 1, and have did a small dance of joy as I've never been able to follow a pattern before.
(I used yarn i 'test' with, telling myself it was okay if i messed up - and so far, no mess ups!)

Dilemma #1 - pfb?  What in Yarn's name is 'pfb'?
Search the knitting books i own (not a lot) and reread the pattern thoroughly.  OK.
"Purl into front, then back of stitch.  1 stitch increased."

So, when i purl into front, do i actually FINISH the stitch?  (Do i go so far as to move it off the end of the left needle?)

OR

Do i leave it on the left needle (which seems to be rather tight) and somehow wind the RIGHT needle from...
LEFT to Right
BACK to front
THROUGH the back loop of the stitch i'm still stuck in?

Am I making any kind of sense at all?
(This is why i don't attempt patterns. Sad )

Okay.
I pfb'ed like this:
Yarn in front of needle (ofcourse) insert needle behind the front stitch, wrap yarn, pull that back out ... like a regular purl
but don't drop the stitch off the left needle!
then insert needle behind the back stitch--here I just pushed the needle the opposite way through the loop on the left needle so your insertion needle is coming towards you (basically), wrap yarn, pull that back out
drop the stitch off the left needle

Does this help?

irid3sc3nt,
YES!  Thank you!  It was just trying to figure out if i was supposed to NOT drop that stitch off the left needle.
Since then - i've been zipping along wonderfully!  I LOVE this pattern!

wow everybaby I love the colors you chose for yours. Very pretty. I keep thinking about this scarf. I really like it. I should add it to the ever growing list of things I plan to knit someday.

Everyone's looks soo great.  Umm... confession...  I frogged what little I had and just started making a regular k n p scarf.  But it's pretty fun, I'm switching colors whenever I feel like it.  So, yeah, I broke the kal.  Troop on without me...

well, i've abandoned any hope fo knitting this for the olympics, but i've been "hired" to knit a scarf for the school play, and i think this will work nicely with lots of colors.

i can't do the pfb. and the above description isn't helping. can someone explain it more?

Yes.
Try this link:  http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/increase.php
Scroll down until you find "Bar Increase" on the right side of the page.  There will be kfb, and under that is the pfb.
It's a video, so I think this is the best you're gonna get.
