My husband collects Hot Wheels and I've promised to make him a display...

Here are the supplies: 2'x2' board, 9 2' crown molding peices, wood glue and black paint. Were it for me, I'd use a happier color, but since it's for him I chose black. Besides the cars are pretty colorful.

First, I glued the molding pieces upside down to create a lip to hold the cars in place...

Then I painted it...

And viola! A handy dandy Hot Wheels display.(I cut off the bottom in the picture, but if you'll notice above there is a peice of molding on the bottom that keeps them from falling out.

This display holds 48 cars, but he's got a quite a few! I'm glad this came out well, but now I'm going to have to make some more!!

Thanks for looking!

That looks so neat!  The black really makes the cars stand out!   Does anyone have any good ideas for displaying Hot Wheels out of the box?  My boys have a bunch and the best idea I've heard of is spray painting soup cans and stacking them on a shelf along the wall, so each can resembles a culvert sort of.  This would look really cool, but I don't go through enough cans for one thing and was wondering about the sharp edges for another.

I was thinking this was for cars that were out of the box, too.  I have some from when I was a kid that I played with all the time.  I know my nephews had some hot wheels box thing on wheels that had separate compartments for each car, but I think that was more geared towards storage.  And it was a store-bought item.

I have thought of making one for individual cars. The best thing I can think of is creating a frame and grid out of foam-core board. It's inexpensive, easy to work with, comes in different collors and is reasonably sturdy. But you can't get foam-core board at as hardware store, which is why I made this one first.

I've seen the wheeled cases, but I think alot of their cars wouldn't fit, and they'd need more than one case, and I have a feeling all of the cases would get dumped each time they played.  (no, their not perfect  Wink  )  I like the foam core idea.  I wonder how it would hold up.  They use their cars everyday.  Right now their in a plastic tote, but the ones on the bottom don't get played with and I know it does horrible things to the paint jobs.
Undecided

Thanks for the ideas!
