Thin single ply okay to knit?
«
on:
December 07, 2005 09:57:28 AM »
Hello! I am a total newbie at spinning (I'm not even a week old yet!) and I am spinning this merino/tussah blend. I was hoping to knit a large scarf/wrap in a lace pattern with my yarn. Would it be okay to not ply this yarn? I am comfortable spinning at this width and would like to just go with the flow.
(gratuitous fiber shot)
BTW I've been amazed by all the yarns on Craftster! You all rock!

sure! go for it! remember that if you knit with an single and it's too over-twisted(more than a 30 degree angle) and you don't use an equal ratio of knits to purls, it may bias. That said, a bias is not always a bad thing! I knit with singles all the time and they are lovely.
btw, your spinning is wonderful, especially for a newbie! yay!

Thanks for the advice and the compliments- bias would be okay and now I'm going off to spin some more!

I agree! And frankly, I like single-plyed yarn better then plyed yarn. I just like the way it feels and knits up.
Mmmmmm....single ply....

OOOOOH, lovely yarn.
It's totally okay to knit with singles - just remember to set the twist (with water or steam) and straighten any over-spinning before knitting it - you don't want it to unspin/ ravel! Ignore people who say you can't (my first spinning instructor, for instance...), and do what you want

I'm knitting up a one skein wonder with a similar weight single ply right now. It's fine, just make sure to set the twist. Good luck, make sure to post pics!
Oh, yeah, and your yarn is beautiful, nice job!

YAAAAY!!! I was thinking of waiting for Fiber Friday, but I'm such a proud momma!
A little over twist in a few spots, but I can deal. I have tons more of this roving (?) to spin and after I make something out of it, I'll post it!
Fyberduck- I was going to say "my baby is drying" but that just sounds wrong.
