Here is my first craft challenge entry!  (and with finals in two days, it was fabulous procrastination ;-)

So I tried to find the funkiest stuff in the hardware store and came across all these little sprockets and doo-hickeys.  Theyre only like 5 cents each so I was able to get a whole bunch (a variety of course) for 10 bucks and made this hardcore hardware jewelry set:

The set includes two pairs of earrings, a bracelet, and a choker/headband.  The first pair of earrings is just made of two little nut covers that I epoxyd to some post earring backs.  The dangly earrings have lengths of chain decorated with the little sprockets.  The bracelet I am particularly proud of, as I figured out how to make a toggle closure out of a gasket and wingnut.  The final piece can be worn a number of ways.  It is made of chain and sprockets on a memory wire frame, so it can be worn on the wrist, around the neck choker-style, or my personal fav: in the hair!

Most of the pieces are nuts and chain I picked up at the hardware store.  Additional crafty materials I supplied: jewelry jump rings, memory wire, epoxy, earring backs/loops, and pliers.  Hope you like!

I had a similar idea (of jewelry), for this , but I backed out of participating on this challenge. The nearest hardware store is only 4 blocks away, but when you have all this crappy weather & snow...

Anyway, you have my vote.

Thanks!  yes, actually i did have an issue with the heaviness of the earrings.  The first version  was almost twice as long!  but i shortened them and made sure not to use the more solid pieces (nuts, wingnuts) on them.  If i stuck with the thin washers (and i included some thin chain as well) they were fine.  But ingeneral the other pieces aren't too heavy.

I actually really like heavy jewelry (i like to torture myself). I just cast some ear weights in bronze. they are hella heavy! I'm not normal though.

god, i love this! i love that style of jewelery, but i always thought it looked too fussy/busy with all the beads that are usually attached. the silver is perfect!

i'd LOVE an earring like that. (i only ever wear one, and i love heavy jewelery too!)

I like it.  Does it make jingly noises?  I had a set of bracelets that I wore back in high school that make noise as they banged against each other.  It was quite loud, but I think that's part of the reason why I loved them.  I also love how you photographed them against the purple fabric---totally like a jewelry display case!

I have wanted to do something like that for so long, but I don't think mine would be nearly as good as yours!  I love the excess of stuff and your choice of hardware   Tongue Thanks for the inspiration.

When I first saw these, I was speechless. I wanted to write something, but didn't know how to convey a jaw- drop into words. I still don't, but I wanted to write a response anyway because your jewelry is so awesome. I've seen jewelry made out of hardware before, but nothing so pretty...it's dainty, but not too dainty. Okay, enough drooling...

Thanks everyone for the awesome feedback!  in response to a few questions: yes they are a bit jangly, mostly the bracelet ;-)  But if thats your thing, you could add a few tiny bells in amongst the hardware- could be a nice effect.  As for it getting caught in my clothes, not really.  all the hardware pieces are closed loops, and the sprockets too small to catch much.  Though the headband is sometimes a little hard to get out of my hair, i'll admit!
I've been really impressed with everybody's projects!  I am always looking to craftster for my inspiration- im happy to think some people will take something from my ideas as well!

I think I love the wingnut toggle the most. It's clever and cool. I may have to incorporate that idea into non-hardware jewelry!
