Hi everyone!  I'm just posting to show off my first fair isle project!  I made this for the ongoing wish swap round 3, and craftster Batgirl requested a hat with skulls.  Here's what I sent:

Ooooh!  That's very cool!  I'd love a hat like that, but I really need to work on my color changing skills.

That's amazing! your FIRST fair isle?   Shocked  Man, on my first fair isle I was stranding so tightly that the hat intended for a large adult male ended up going to my 3-yr old nephew because it turned out so small (and I'm a loose knitter, even. I usually have to go down 2 needle sizes to get gauge).

your hat is fantastic! you must be so proud! I saw it in the wish list 3 gallery but didn't realize it was your first fair isle ever. congratters!

it started out kinda tight because I was pulling the yarn too tightly across the back, but then I realized what I was doing and adjusted slightly.  i almost didn't want to send it!  but I now realize that its not so hard, so I can make one for myself  Wink

Yeah, I don't know, I still haven't got the knack yet.  I tried to make the hat again and tried to strand as loosely as possible, and it still ended up tight. I'm going to really have to work on this technique! Maybe I need to do yoga or deep breathing before I knit fair isle, so I can be relaxed and not pulll so hard on the yarn!  Cheesy

ok no prob...its pretty easy.  I just used a basic hat pattern, then I added some squares and the skull motif is from the SNBN book, tattoo baby sweater pattern.  I dont' know what the exact gauge was, but i used caron simply soft and size 7 needles.

CO 80 sts, join to work in the round
Work K2P2 ribbing for 10 rounds
Next round- *K9, Inc1 reapeat from * all the way around.
This is where I started the checkered pattern.  It made a pretty good square if I did 4 stitches by 5 rows.  I did 2 rows of checks (10 rounds of knitting) then I put in the skull, with the check pattern continuing all the way around.  Then I did 2 more rows of checks, then I started to crown decreases as folllows-
Decrease rnd 1- *K9, K2tog, repeat from * all the way around.
Decrease rnd 2- *K8, K2tog, repeat from *
Decrease rnd 3- *K7, K2tog, repeat from *
And so on, subtracting one from the number you knit, then K2tog until....
Last decrease rnd- K2tog all the way around
Break yarn, leaving about 6 inches, then string the tail through the remaining loops.  Weave in the ends then your done!

The best part about this hat pattern is its really basic and there's lots of space to put any type of fair isle or intarsia design.  Its also really quick...I've been knitting these for Xmas presents and it only takes me like 2 nights to finish one.
