it is always a good idea to make an appointment, i have always ended up going to make the appointment talking to the artist about what i want sometimes they do that day other times i make appointment depends on how complex the work is

DO make an appt. if you know what you want. Go in to talk to the artist and show him your design.  He/She might ask you to leave it there. They might also ask for a deposit that should come out of your total.

I worked at a tattoo shop for 6 years, so one tip for you is, if you are happy with the experience tip your artist.  This is always very nice.  Tip according to how much you paid or tip according to how great the experience was. We have had customers tip more than the actual tattoo price.  BUT anything is nice.

Be calm, be nice and be ready. If your not ready dont make the appt.

Take care and have fun!
