Needle felted mini Frida doll
«
on:
November 27, 2005 06:11:39 AM »
I wanted to have a cute little Frida Kahlo doll so I decided to needle felt one
I added a few beads and flowers for the earrings, necklace and hair. She is tiny (about 4-5 in. tall) and stands by herself. The face was difficult to do and does not look exactly like I wanted it to look, but maybe I will keep poking a little more to define the features.
Here it is:

Thank you for the nice comments!
teamwang - hehe, yes! you are right, the mustache is missing
I will see if I find some darker skin-colored roving or yarn to add something very discret but that make it more look like Frida.
GraceOblivious - Thank you! now that you mention about helping with the face: yes! you are an expert on needle felting and I admire your work so maybe you can help me
... I would like that the doll has a little nose, just something small to have her face a little more 3D, but it is so small that I am afraid that if I add some more roving it will look too big, so I was thinking: should I do inverse? should I poke (felt) more all around the nose and the rest of the face so that what is around the nose is going deeper and then the nose becomes more prominent? or is it better just to keep her like this? it is the first time that I needle felt a face so small and it was much harder than a bigger one, but it was fun to do

The only thing I would change is to give her heavier eyebrows.
But she is really awesome...

Ok, am not familiar with Frida so wasn't sure. Your idea might well work, though usually adding wee shaped bits works better for details in my experience. Sounds like you have done larger faces with more definition and elevations. So you know about taking tiny patches of roving and molding them in the center to look like the "muscle mass or structure" - much like sculpturing muscles and nose shapes in clay. Excect with felting, leave wisps around the "mass" Then needle the wisps in place and fine tune shape the part. If you have a size #40 finishing needle it is easier to do the tiny shapes. Try just a tiny pinhead of a ball if you want just a bit of a nose bump. It is amazing what you can do with a few fibers. Sometimes I add a very thin layer over top the whole face to blend the shapes and get a smooth look. If you put the mustache fiber under that final layer it might give a very faint mustache effect.
However, she is truely Adorable as is. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your advise GraceOblivious, I will do it the way you said and a little bit of more roving for the nose.
And your tip of adding a thin layer over the whole thing to get a smoother look is very good, did not hear about it before and now I want to try it! Thanks for sharing your tips, I will post the results when I am done with the improvements.

I like that you added the flower beads in her hair. I think Frida would approve.
