My boyfriend and I are in a long distance relationship -- I live in New York City and he's all the way in North Dakota! We're from completely different worlds -- he has a FARM, for crying out loud. Smiley

He's super creative and wonderful, and this is going to be our first Christmas together, and I really want to get him something as perfect and special as he is. I'm already making him a nice soft green (his favorite color) scarf for the harsh North Dakota winter, but I want to make him something else, too.

Is there anything I can make him for his guitar? Or to reflect his guitar playing or poetry writing? He plays a Fender Stratocaster, if that makes any difference. Don't even ask me anything else on it - I don't know guitars at ALL.

He's super special and important to me. I really want to make this gift amazing.

Thanks, guys.

xoxo

That makes a little difference because it is a BADASS guitar and your boyfriend must be cool Smiley
(I got one for my 10th birthday it was my very first electric guitar-- I was a total rockstar)

What about a handbound journal to write lyrics and poems in? You could glue a few pictures of you two together in it, make a few pages decorated with pics of guitars
Or you could make him masculine guitar/music stationary (to write you hint hint)
My boyfriend is the same type, one year I made him a box to keep quitar picks, his capo, etc and i deocrated it with guitar cut outs and stuff. He loved it.

Thanks so much for the great ideas!!!

He's still a bit shy about his music and things, but I loooove the idea of a personalized guitar pick. It's too good not to do. Smiley

I think I'm going to try the homemade journal thing, too. He'd really appreciate something like that. Maybe (crazy wishful thinking) he'll even write a song about me...  Wink

Okay, there's a snag. WHERE can I find the personalized guitar pick? I want it to say something cute like "Maggi <3 Darrin." I don't want 500 picks lying around, and I don't want the one where only initials are ingraved... Sad
Please help, guys.

http://sterlingguitarpicks.com/ does initials -maybe if you call them you can arrange for more, although they probably have a custom engraving machine that's set up to only do one line. Worth a shot tho.

I'm going to recommend my new favourite obsession for the guitar pick...

PMC.

Yes, that's right!  Precious Metal Clay!  Eee!

http://www.pmcsupply.com/

It would be super easy.  Make yourself a cookiecutter type whatsit, 20% larger than a regular pick.  Roll out your clay, cut out as many picks as you'd like, and I'd suggest making up a stamp of some kind beforehand to press on whatever design you'd like!  Huzzah!  And, if you buy the stuff off ebay, it's dirty cheap, and certainly not twenty bucks for one pick that doesn't even have the design you want.

Good luck!

Haha, you mean $25 worth of picks. Smiley

Thank you so much, though, guys!!

Yeah, I'll keep thinking about what I want to do.

Is there any way I could MAKE a guitar pick?

I was just about to suggest that! Making your own pick for someone else isnt really a good idea because they have to be a uniform thickness with the correct shape, bendability etc etc etc. Post pics when you're done.... I might make a few pics for my boy too...

Yeah, I do mean $25 worth, haha..sorry!

The post that kellygreen9 wrote, didn't that have to do with making one? I clicked the link and read a little bit, but I'm not sure if I hurried too fast or not..but wasn't it so you could make your own pick out of clay??

That'd be an option! Orrr if there's some sort of tool you could buy somewhere that would engrave some silver picks, that'd work too.

PAINTING?! I dunno, you'd have to paint awfully small, and find some sort of paint that wouldn't scratch off..but that could work.

i made pics for my boyfriend and used fabric paint on plastic pics and as far as i know its still stuck on there

Yeah the thickness part scares me. And making it look right. His twin brother is VERY into music, and I don't want it to be seen as some sort of gag gift.. Smiley

As soon as I get my weaving loom, though, I'm making him a guitar strap.

I made my boy a guitar strap for his birthday back in October, and he said it was his favorite present ever and his friends were all into it too.  I embroidered a haunted forest scene onto a long strip of muslin and then backed it with some brown corduroy and made the fastener parts out of vinyl.  It cost less than $5 to make!

That is super cool!!!

I'm going to make him the strap, I think, for his birthday -- which is in January, and when I get to see him. I need some time to get used to my loom, too. Smiley

This is what I'm set on doing, now: I saw in the Oriental Trading Co. catalog a metal engraving tool, so maybe if I get that and some plain stainless steel picks (except I don't know what SIZE and THICKNESS!!! Any guitar players feel like helping me? Please?!), I could engrave my own stuff on them!

I need to make something for his twin brother, now. Because I'm already making something for his brother's wife - she's like my best friend. And I'm making something for Darrin.. So I definitely have to make his brother something. How about a box to put guitar picks? Is that too dumb?

I think a guitar pick box is a cute idea.  You could maybe start out with an altoids tin and make a decoupage collage on it.

Guess what? I was wrong. I didn't buy my ex-boyfriend's customized pick at the site I said I did in an earlier post (www.sterlingguitarp icks.com) I bought it at http://www.sterlingguitarpics.com/index.html I guess the difference of the K made me think it was there, haha. Even though I just looked at both of the websites and they pretty much look the same..with the same address and all, the prices are different, hmm.

I thought that the money I paid for the guitar pick was a great deal, but I'm pretty sure he only does the initials. So it wouldn't really help you out, but I just had to mention it.

You're going to think I'm cracked for not knowing this, but do bass players use picks too, or is it just guitar players? Duh?

Okay, I just sent the stuff out, today! Just about everything's been crafted, so I HAD to post it, here.

This one's for my best friend (who just happens to be my boyfriend's sister-in-law). I wanted to make it super-long so she could wrap it around her neck a whole bunch of times, but I didn't have enough yarn... We're both close to six feet tall, so though it's somewhat long, I would have preferred it to be longer...

Next is the guitar pick box I finished for my boyfriend's twin brother (and my best friend's husband). He's VERY into his music. This stuff was sent in a box without a description; I hope he figures out what it's for. Smiley I stained, sanded, and stained again. And I lined the inside with felt. I think it looks very professional, don't you?

Finally is the stuff I made my guy. Smiley He wanted a scarf (it's very cold in North Dakota -- duh, lol), so I made him one in his favorite color, and then I got him the personalized guitar pick, and made him a little pouch for it.

Okay, so how does everything look? I hope they like all of it...

xoxo
