Where the heck can I buy lye?!? or even dried soapwort?

red devil lye is not being sold anymore.....stupid meth dealers ruined it for us crafters by making their wacky pills with it..........now nobody can buy it.......

Actually the company is no longer producing it at all, but I was sure it was due to business reasons. There is still lye being made and sold by different companies. Here's a thread discussing places to purchase lye.

i buy mine from a hardwarestore and my local supermart: they have the lye locked up at the super market i pay $5 for 16oz i get the red devil one...


16 oz of lye makes about 3 1/2batches

   I really don't want to go to the extream of making my own. Pouring water through  a barrel in the woods full of wood ash seems just a bit over zealous.

I thought this was hilarious!!!! I pictured myself trying to do this, because once I get an idea in my head, by god, i'm gonna do it no matter what it takes! Luckily I work at a hardware store and can get lye special ordered for like 2.38 a lb

I found a supply of soapwort at wildweeds.com It is a great supply to a variety of hard to find herbs. I don't work for them, I just brew and make beauty supplies. I was ecstatic they had soapwort!

did you ever find your soapwort?  it's funny to me because I used to work at the state botanical garden and the soapwort was going mad and taking over the entire herb garden -- I weeded and threw away so much of that stuff, now I wish I'd saved it for you!

Yes, I found it and have used it. I read somewhere that it is a bad idea to use soapwort on hair only because it could burn your eyes. I used it as shampoo and didn't have a problem, but then I made sure I kept my eyes closed tight. I don't like getting any shampoo in my eyes! I'm not sure how much i was supposed to use in what amount of water or if I'm supposed to take out the herb before I use it. It was very mild and I wasn't sure if I was actually washing my hair by the feel of it. It does take some time to build up the oils so who knows?

You can buy small amounts of lye still.  Roebic still offers crystal drain opener that is 100% lye with no adds.  You can obtain this at Lowes.
