So.  I decided, for a number of reasons, that store bought eggs and chicken were not the best idea.  The solution was to do it myself!  Self reliance and all of that.  I live in Canada, and my city lets you keep agricultural animals in town for personal use.

I've since done this type of project with chickens in Australia and pheasants (in canada again).

First - we got chickens and ducks.  Had to keep the chicks/ducklings inside under heating lamp until they got big enough.  To keep from drowning, had a saucer with marbles in the water.

Then, we gutted an old car of the entire floor and seats, and replaced it with plywood (found on side of the road).  The passenger seat turned into nestboxes, also made out of found wood.  We installed a heat lamp via extension cord onto the roof of the car, and covered the floor in shavings.  We found chicken wire for a fence, an old kiddie pool for the ducks, and camo net for the top of the car.

Resulting in 3 dozen eggs a week from 6 chickens, plus 4 ducks (which we slaughtered last week)

Also, my favorite chicken: princess.  She won first prize at the fair.
(Sorry if these pictures are huge.  This is my first go posting here)

I love the car as a chicken coop!  This is a great idea that I've often pondered upon, but living in a small apartment makes it unfeasible.  Keep those tips coming though, as I may move back to the Midwest one day and start a coop of my own.

Wow, what an ingenious way to re-use!

They all look warm and cozy and princess is gorgeous (not to mention well camouflaged).  Smiley

this is the ultimate in reuse, reduce, recycle.. kudos to you!!! i grew up with chickens.. so i know exactly what you mean.. the fuzzy white ones we got one year as a cmas present from friends.. we used to wash & blow dry them.. unfortunately, all of our chickens became pets which got my dad a little frazzled.. so much for his plan for a farm Roll Eyes

Love that chicken coop.  Love reconstructed items.  The chickens do look cozy.

We too have had chickens for a long time to avoid store bought eggs and chicken, for various reasons.  Anyway, strangely, about a month ago all the chickens stopped laying eggs.  We were getting a couple dozen a day or so, now only a few now and then.  My dad really spoils them and takes good care of them so I don't know what the deal is.

What a cool idea.
Princess is awesome looking.
I don't know anything about chickens--
--is she like a special breed or something?
One thing upsets me though. Your first pictures is of 4 cutie duckies and then at the end of your post you proceed to say you slaughtered 4 ducks! Sad Please don't tell me its them! Can't bare the thought! haha

This rocks!  Your chickens look so happy and snuggly.

As soon as hubby and I buy a house I want a few as well, not a fan of the massive chicken farm mentality.  I don't know about the slaughter though, I'm a wuss, it's totally better for you and it's nice to know that the animals we eat are respected and cared for while they are alive...  I'd just have to get over it I guess.

That's sooo cool!  I love the fuzzy chickens like princess, and all your look very happy and snuggly in their car.  We have chickens at the school I work at and use their eggs in our baking.  I want to get some once we have room.

And our chickens stopped (or decreased) their egg laying when it got cold.  I've been told when the light changes for winter they stop until spring.  (I think.)

That is such a neato idea.  I totally want a farm like setup one day!  The hand raised chickens have the best eggs cause you know what they are eating and the chickens are happy as well!  I also feel that we should respect and care for what we need to consume to survive.   So ROCK ON!! Grin  This was a supreme idea.

LOL I love it. What a great idea. Had a white sliky ages ago, she was my sons pet. He was 3 and he would walk up to her and she would squat for him to pet her.
