Last summer, I spent 6 weeks in Providence, Rhode Island at Rhode Island School of Design enrolled in their summer program. There, I majored in fashion design. Our final project was to create a garment of clothing out of found materials. The final garment would be modeled at the student showcase fashion show at the end of the program. People made their outfits out of everything you could possibly imagine: pipe cleaners, soda cans, bubble wrap, cardboard boxes, vinyl records, table-cloths, Starbucks cups, leaves, orange peels, razor blades, potato sacks, rubber gloves, beads, etc...I chose to make mine out of duck tape and trashbags. I faced a few difficulties when making my outfit at first. Though I liked the elasticity of the black garbage bags, the material was thin and flimsy. After much experimentation with the capabilities of my materials, I finally had a breakthrough: knitting with trashbags. This would allow flexibility and durability. I cut the garbage bags into 2 inch strips, knotting the ends together to create a sort of trash bag yarn. Since I didn't bring my knitting needles with me, I used two sharpened pencils. After a few mistakes, I finally created a sort of bikini top solely out of knitted trashbags. The middle portion is strips of woven ducktape and the bottom portion is trash bags again, only billowed rather than knitted. I stuck duck tape bows randomly to the billowed part of the dress (although you can't see them very well).

I brought the dress home with me to California and recently wore it to my senior homecoming. Though it got a little hot and sweaty, I certainly looked unique  Cheesy

Check it out.....

It reminds me of soemthing that was done on the BravoTV show, "Project Runway". If you haven't seen that show, all I can say is: "YOU MUST WATCH IT!" I've got the whole first season on tape, so I can watch it whenever I want. I can't wait for season 2! (December 7th)

whoa nelly that is awesome! when me and my mummy dearest were trapsing around town scouting out a cheap formal dress. my mum said "I don't want you wearing what everyone else is wearing" "nor do I" I replied.
I said "this girl on craftster made a really awesome dress out of garbage bags. she turned around and gave me the look my dad gives me when I ask to use his dremel. sorry I'm high on melting plastic fumes (it was an accident I swear!) so to cut a long story long, I love this dress.

No zipper, it is corset like in the back (we weren't allowed to use zippers or buttons or anything like that) so it laces it up with you guessed it: TRASH BAGS.
