hi all! this is my first post -- you can just look at the pics if you want, but read the story behind it too:

This was originally a quilt made of old t-shirts I didn't wear anymore...which, I know is terrible to destroy rad shirts but I couldn't part with these...they would've sat in my attic forever otherwise. I cut the screenprints out and sewed them together.
I was going to enter it in the Venus Magazine Holiday Craft-Off as a quilt but then decided at the last minute (literally like 2 hours before the deadline) to make it a dress. SO I clothespinned the quilt to myself, snapped a photo thinking they wouldn't pick it, and then emailed it in as a "gown". When it was actually picked as one of the winners so then I had to turn it into a real dress so I could get it in to them to be photographed for the December 1st issue.
The problem with that was...I moved to Canada this summer, which was a permanent move until my roommate guy named Chris went all creepy and to avoid being serial killed by him (it would've happened eventually) i moved back to Wisconsin.  But I forgot my sewing machine pedal in his apartment (along with 2 bras) which he refused to return. PLUS I've never made a dress before and have no clue what i'm doing. SO my friend scott suggested his mom's brand spanking new still-in-the-box sewing machine...but she said i couldn't borrow it because she hadn't even used it yet (understandable). On the day before it was due, i took the day off work and he hijacked the sewing machine. I had exactly 6 hours to sew it and return to machine before she got home from work as a 4th grade teacher. tip: to hallucinate without drugs, make a dress in a 6 time-frame. All I remember is making two panels of patches and modelling the shape over another dress and sewing. Somehow that took 6 hrs.

Soo as you see, had to include the story. note: if you live in Toronto, avoid being part of a serial killer rampage and dont get involved with Chris  -- unless you're a serial killer too and like the smell of hamster chips and smokey poop.

ANYWAY the Venus Zine Winter issue will be at Barnes and Noble, Borders and other stores on Dec. 1. Look me up!

--------

SO here it is:
First the Quilt

and the contest entry:

Then the final result, 6 hour T-Shirt Gown:

Very cool! Did you have any specific methods when you originally had made it into a quilt? I'm asking b/c i started a thread here recently on a tee shirt duvet cover i want to make and would appreciate some tips...I was going to do it a little more symmetrical.

Your dress looks awesome btw - and congrats on the Venus Mag story!

Will it matter that the 'gown' that you pinned to yourself is not the same as the final product? (as in: different screen prints in different positions)....  It really is a fabulous idea, though.  You did a great job!

It was for a DIY made-for-under-$20 type spread so I think they just wanted a concept.

and to answer the other post about method: i just sewed then into panels and then sewed the panels together. If certain prints were too small or too big I adjusted those panels with different patterened fabrics. I shouldve taken pictures along the way.
