Some of you may or may not have noticed, but the felt board now has mods!
This means our felt board can have sticky posts and will be kept generally neat and tidy by
GraceOblivious and myself.

So, this post is for any suggestions about the felting board.
Anything you want to see?
Anything you don't want to see?
Sticky post topics you have in mind? (I've had a suggestion for a resource sticky already)
Any thoughts on rules concerning the felting part of craftster?

More wet felting!  More wet felting doodads and tutes. I want to make a scarf or little slippers. Maybe a purse or clutch. I want inspiration and a kick in my rear! Embellishing felt, i.e. beads, embroidery. I can't justify getting involved in needle felting, (I have so many other crafty ventures) But, it looks so neat. (I want, want, want...) I'd like to see more crafters exploring in handmade felt. I like your idea for resources, the best places for roving, supplies, etc.. Maybe hand dyeing felt or is that in knitting and yarns? I think that is all for now...

Ah YES.  We would love to see those things as well.  For that it takes interested members to share their items, to make tutes, to post new stuff, to give comments and feedback, to add info to existing threads/topics.

Jane Doe and I have done a few tutes.  We got to be mods because we sent a request to Leah to make those stickies so they would stay at the top of the felting areas.  Lo and behold, Leah checked us out, and saw we were active in felting area and she offered us the opportunity to become volunteer mods.  Crazy felters that we are, we jumped on board.  No pay, no glory, but hey we get to help out sister/brother felters.

The mod thing allows us to make topics stick, to combine topics, to move topics, et cetera.  Mostly clean up and janitorial services.  LOL  So first off we stuck the tutes to the top.  Now we are ready to do some house cleaning or organizing to make some things easy to find and to find them all in one place.

Before wading in to re-form stuff, finding out what this great community of felters desires seems pretty important.  Keeping the area clean and organized is one way to keep Craftster quicker and to decrease band-with so we all can be on-line at once and get fewer "busy or down" bombs.

At least that is my take on the mod mission.  Was tickled to death to see Jane Doe had started this topic and is getting things going.  Yeah! Jane!!!!!

Ok enough, by now many of you know I'm a chronic over-explainer.  Hopefully though the dets are helpful. Grin

I started the topic at 2am where I live and it's now the morning. I'm now thinking that you and I GraceOblivious should probably talk more before starting these sort of posts.
My appology!

Oh noooooo, no no appology needed.  It is cool that you did this, totally.  Was just throwing my thoughts into the mix.  Until Leah brought us into the mod squad, what the mods did was not really clear to me.  So just wished to share a bit, hoping to provide a bit of background for others as "oblivious" as myself.

You go girl!  you have my total support.  And if I got any stuff mixed up or wrong, just call it out.

Kept thinking about this (you know those fiber dreaming times when even in sleep fiber reigns).  Is there a discussion topic that might get us moving in this direction.  Or some way to encourage more people to delurk and share felting adventures.  Things now are heavier in needle felting because needle felters are sharing stuff - perhaps it is faster to make?Huh  or we can craft smaller items?Huh  We are getting a few more wet felting completed items and questions so take heart and keep posting.

BTW, have you thought about needle felting as one way to embellish and enhance wet felt - building 3d compontents onto a wet felted item, or as a way to set a pre-felt for more precise design then moving onto a wet felting process.  It takes the same fibers and the only additional supplies needed are a foam cushion and a barbed felting needle.

Thanks for sharing your ideas.

I just stopped by to give a woot to Jane & Grace... Cheesy
Great idea for a thread & congrats on being the Felting Mods  :-)!!

An idea could be to just start the threads for these felters, to get their gears turning... Smiley  Depending on what topic floats my boat that the moment, I start "Scrapbook" threads.  I started a Sticky thread for Halloween '05 that was 2005 Completed Costumes Scrapbook (completed projects with pictures go here) http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=60346.0.  It was a fun thread that was mostly geared towards photos & showing off their hard work for the season!

So maybe, "Pictures of your best 2005 Felt Project!".  We tend to make so many projects, we don't even think to post them, until we see a thread topic that gets us off our butt to do so Cheesy

Some others could be...
  • Felted Gift ideas
  • Felted Critters
  • Favorite Felting Supply Sites (or Felting Resources)
  • Felting for the holidays (whatever holiday is coming up)

Anywho, glad to see the Felt boards are growing ~ hopefully you guys can teach me a thing or 20 about it Cheesy

I am glad that now the felting board has moderators!  Cheesy  And I see that now thanks to the wonderful mods (GraceOblivious and JaneDoe) the board is now alive and is getting full of information, tutorials and ideas and is growing fast. Thanks Jane and Grace, you are doing a great job!

I like felting but I stoped doing it for a while and after finding this felting board I got inspired to start felt projects again and now I am doing more things and am more inspired.

The idea of the sticky posts is very good, and there are already some good ideas given. Other ideas that cross my mind are:

- A 'felt-along' thread: The moderators could choose a topic and we could all felt along and come up with our version, either wet or needle felted. Like this we would have one more reason to felt and the felting board would be having more new projects to see  Smiley

- The 'favorite felting tips' idea that was given already by GraceOblivious

- A 'Felt resources thread' with info about books, websites, supplies, etc.

- Maybe a 'felting troubles' thread where we could share our problems related to felting and maybe find a solution? I for example get a bad hand allergy while wet felting and I am curious to know if it is only me or if it is a common thing (I am not allergic to wool and I don't get any reaction with needle felting), so maybe a topic like this with strange things that happen to us or our felting project would be nice, helpful and even fun?

Well, these were my crazy ideas but I am vey glad to see that the mods are doing a great job and that the felt board is growing so fast!  Smiley

More people, more ideas, give, give, give  Grin

Will keep the running list in the first post - please comment on what you want most or share new ideas.

Thanks

ooooh so much has happened here in the short month i was offline!! you gals rock!!! i really like the idea of a felt-along. i think it would be fun to see everyone's unique take on a project and then showcase them afterwards. i'd like to try and take on something big though, like one of GraceOblivious's chair covers or a rug.
sunday dec 3rd i'm going to a felting workshop and one of the project options is felted slippers. seems like a lot of my felting friends on here would like to learn how to do this, so i'm pondering choosing that for my project. i suppose if they come out decent i could try a do a tut Smiley

Wondered why all was quiet on the teamwang front Wink

I've been itching to do a large rug for a while too. UNI ends in a week, and my man is flying to Japan for a month, so I'll hopefully have all the time in the world to work on it.
I was hoping to do a skin-themed rug complete with vein + arteries poking through different parts.
Maybe a rug could be our first felt-along? Maybe not, it isn't inclusive of needle-felters and maybe a more simple craft-along would be better.
Maybe felt soap? It's simple, and there's a tutorial so everyone can get involved
http://www.mielkesfarm.com/felt_soap.htm

Whether you decide to post a tut or not, definately take a camera with you to your felt class. It makes things so much easier to remember when you leave the class and try your next project at home.

Have fun at your class!
