I make this bad boy every year for the Children's Table.  (And sometimes one for the adult table)  It's a turkey centerpiece with edible cookie feathers.  (The photos were shot by Paul Chinn)

To create this centerpiece you'll need:
Various Styrofoam shapes:
1 six-inch ball (body)
1 small egg shape (head)
2-inch piece of tube (neck)

Small fine-tooth saw
Medium-size foam paint-brush
1 tube of Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint - Dark Brown
Free hand drawn eyes, beak and wattle or use template below
Elmer's glue
15-20 candy or Popsicle sticks
1 package refrigerated dough to prepare 15-20 cookie feathers covered with Royal Icing.
Several wooden toothpicks
Crayons
Raffia
Butcher paper tablecloth

Carefully saw off the bottom portion of the large white ball so it sits flat. Use foam brush to paint each turkey part - body, head and neck, and allow to dry. Use a toothpick to attach the head to the neck, another to attach neck to body.

Set turkey aside and prepare feather cookies. Roll out dough; use a small paring knife or pizza cutter to create feather shapes. Press candy stick into the back of the cookie and bake according to package instructions.

Allow to cool and coat the front side of cookie with colored royal icing. Create feather markings by dragging a toothpick of darker color through the icing.

To make royal icing, you'll need:
3 tablespoons meringue powder
4 cups confectioners sugar
6 tablespoons warm water

With a mixer, beat all ingredients at low speed until icing forms peaks, 7- 10 minutes. Makes 3 cups.

Assemble the turkey by placing cookies throughout the backside of the bird. Use a plain candy stick to make an initial hole into the Styrofoam. Surround turkey with raffia-wrapped crayon bundles, one for each child.

And hoping for an early death you swam so far you lost your breath, and struggling in the ebb and flow I took your hand, but you let go...
And now the ocean fills your lungs, and now you've got what you had come for, resting peaceful as you sink to drown under a sea of strangers.

I'm just now seeing this because I felt bad that Thanksgiving doesn't get as much love as the other holidays; thanks for sharing such a great project - I think I might try this for our holiday this year!
