Cool pompom scarf... any ideas?

I found these scarves in the Title Nine catalog, and I'm trying to figure out how to make hand-made versions. I've never seen yarn with big pompoms, so the only solution I can think of is buying a skein of yarn and a bag of pom poms and stringing them every few inches.

I've been trying to think of a way to add the pompoms while knitting, which would be cool, because you could create a pattern as you go -- sort of like intarsia. I guess you could manually sew the pomps in, but I really like the way they're embedded in the scarf.

So what do you think, Craftsters? Any wicked creative  ideas?

you could make/buy a million mini poms and then string them along on a thread and knit that with another kind of yarn. that would work best with the store bought mini poms. id use storebought ones simply cause of the amount of time you'd be saving by having them readymade.

could you knit/crochet the scarf base with a furry type yarn, and then make periodic "bobbles" with other yarns? that might work...

it looks to me like maybe they even strung little pompoms to the yarn and then knitted it.. though time consuming I bet it would be cute.

Actually, last time I was in Joann's I noticed yarn with little pom poms...however, I'm fairly sure it was only available in candyish pastels. My first thought was "my god that would be a bitch to work with"... of course, the second thought was "oh, but it'd be so cute!"

i know its been a while but i thought i'd let you know there is a yarn that i saw at my LYS that has mini pom pom bits in all sorts of beautiful colourways. I will check out the name next time i'm there!
