Blue Jeanome Project: the DNA of our denim

Hi all,

I came across craftster awhile ago, but haven't posted anything yet.  One day while exploring, I came across Craft Challenge 6 and decided that I really wanted to get involved.

This project is something that I dreamed up one day and have thought about making for awhile now.  Obviously, this challenge inspired me to actually pull it off.  All of the pieces of the double helix are appliqued to the base and the word "jeanome" at the bottom is embroidered on.

I've been trying to resize my pictures, but I haven't quite got it yet.  Hopefully these show up, but in case they don't I'll include the links.

edited to add: Well, I guess I should say exactly what my project IS.  It's a wallhanging; a random piece of art that's a play-on-words as well.  ooooo, I feel so new at this. c.

That is so cool! Is that embroidered?  It's so great to see you do that because I have a  good friend who is a geneticist and I was thinking about embroidering a DNA strand on a tote bag for her!!  Great minds think alike!!

Hi GirlyGirlBags,

The actual pieces of the double helix are appliqued onto the base piece.  I made the large rectangle part like a quilt one would piece together.  Then, I had cut out all of the other pieces and put them together like a puzzle and used a whole lot of pins to hold them all together as I stitched them in place.  I had left a small seam allowance around the edge, so I turned it under as I sewed each piece in place.

The word along the bottom edge is embroidered with blue wool.  That was the hardest part.  Denim is definitely difficult to work with at times!

thanks for the explanation.  I will post pictures of my project once it's completed.  i'm so glad you did this because my husband kept saying it would be too hard to craft a strand of DNA.
