I'm throwing my 5 year old to be daughter a birthday party and it's a nature theme -- bugs, birds, small amphibians, reptiles.

I've found favors but am at a loss for craft ideas or food -- it's a short party so I thought autumny-colored cupcakes (CHOCOLATE!) would be in order, but if you have ideas for games or craft/activities I'd love your input!

The parents are all very hands-on and handy so somewhat complicated is no problem.

THanks in advance!

hide plastic figurines of bug etc, thru out your yard or house. divide the kids into small teams- ecah team has to find either a set number of figurines figurines of a specific type. as each team finishes, hand each kid a prize. this would be a good way to end the party- party favours could be handed out as a prize.

alternatively, another good way to end a party is to sit the kids down in a room. remove one child and hide their party favour in the room- so that all the other kids can see. bring the removed child back in- all the other kids say 'cold... warm..... hot..... hotter' to help that child find their prize. this is a good activity to do as the kids are waiting for their parents to pick them up.

natural themed foods include: 'garden' icecream: soften chocolate icecream, and turn it out into a serving bowl/ dish. use a knife to cube the icecream, stir thru gummy worms and chocolate chips. pat down the icecream, until its surface is level. top it with a layer of 'dirt'- crumbled oreos, and gummy candies, fake flowers, plastic bugs, etc. decorate chocolate cup cakes with autumn leaves or flowers, cut from sheets of thinly rolled, coloured marzipan. for something a lttle bit healthier, serve bowls of 'birdfood'- mixed nuts and dry fruits, or trail mix (toss in a few m&m's and kids and adults will gobble it up). cut cookies in the shape of leaves or flowers- if you don't have a cookie cutter of that shape, use the point of a sharp knife or a skewer. decorate a platter of raw cut vegetables with plastic bugs, frogs etc.

garlands of leaves (put them between a layer of paper towels, iron them with a 'silk' setting, then use a large needle to string them together with fishing line) or pinecones (tie pinecones together with fishingline) can be used..... then reused for thanksgiving. garlands of pinecones make great outdoors decorations for thanksgiving/ christmas.

WOW!  Thanks so much for the WONDERFULLY AWESOME IDEAS!  I really love the "I spy" one -- these kids are really observant so this would be lots of fun.  I'd completely forgotten about the dirt/worm favor -- that's fun!  I love the birdseed idea too -- I think I may spin that one to make a bird feeder project or favor -- like peanut butter pinecones?

THANKS a million!

An easy way to make leaf garlands - take a bunch of pliable fall leaves, poke the stem of one from back to front, then front to back through the next leaf - continue until you have a garland. Kids age 5 could do this easily.
