yay! the first meeting of the Jax SnB was a success! we had 4 knitters and one mascot/yarn detangler! (aren't significant others great?  Wink ) i don't know if we will always have it at the same time and place in the future, so anybody who is interested, be sure to check back here for updates!

p.s. whoever was the very cool and nice person (was it you, amy?) who contacted the LYS, a stitch in time, and posted the info about our meeting, THANK YOU! apparently, 2 of the people who showed up today heard about the meeting there. (and i thought it would just be us craftster!)

STITCH 'N BITCH JAX

To all "lurkers" in Jax...
We will be meeting again this Sunday at the Books-A-Million on Atlantic Blvd. between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00. Drop in and say "Hi." You don't have to stay for the whole 2 hours. However,  our last meeting was so fun I was sad that it had to end. Sad

If you have any questions, or need a ride, send me a PM and I will get back to you.
Look forward to seeing you there!

STITCH 'N BITCH JAX
july 25th - meeting minutes

Hi all you Be-atches in Jax. Nobody showed up today, but that's OK because I had a ball all by myself.

This weekend, I brought my three year old son, an aspiring knitter, to SNB. I brought along my childhood toy, a circa 1974 Mattel "Knit Magic" knitting machine. I found this gem in grandparents attic after my grandmother passed away and we were cleaning out the house. Thankfully, I had the foresight to save it for my future child[ren]. I set up shop in the kids area, since no grown-ups were there, and displayed my wares. Soon, I had three or four girls sitting around the table learning to crochet (because knitting is hard) and trying out the knitting machine. Some of the girls had a hard time using the hooks, so I taught them to make chains on their finger. I sent them off with a couple yards of yarn and invited them to return next weekend.

I would really like to start up a children's group also (obviously, not entitled Stitch 'N Bitch). I am going to become involved in the YCGOA's "Each one teach two" campaign. So if you know any interested parties, they may contact me as well.

Would anyone like to participate in the Warm Up America campaign? "A Stitch in Time" is donating yarn for this charity and distributing the final products to needy people.

another idea:

I like to "rescue" handmade knit and crochet items from the trash, garage sales and thrift stores. Who in their right mind would give/throw away something that their kindly old grandmother made? Assholes!

Here are some examples:

<img src="http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/Groups/205/205998/folders/159872/1159309rescue1.JPG" width="470" height="352">

Here is a link to a picture of my favorite, rescued ugly blanket. I took it from my neighbor's trash and washed it up. I usually wear it, sarong-style, when I go outside to smoke (yes: awful, stinky cigarettes..so...
back the f**** off-me[/color])

Maybe we could actually go downtown and hand these beauties out to the homeless folks at Hemming Plaza and on Forsyth St this winter. I have a homeless acquaintence, David, who lives in a park on Forsyth near the Brooklyn art gallery. They're not all crazy-ass drug users. But just in case, maybe I could enlist him to accompany me/us.

Well, that's all I have for now. Contact me at mikenaim@bellsouth.net if you would like to join our group/s.

Aim, this looks great. Everything you posted sounds good -- although I'm in no position to teach anyone anything just yet. I'd accidentally have them making three-toed socks at this point, but perhaps once I get a little better...

I can definitely make a few squares though for Warm Up America though.  :-)

Really looking forward to SnB this Sunday. I ended up talking with a really cool couple at the beaches Books-A-Million Sunday who I was about to recruit for SnB Jax, but found out they were visiting from GA. Likely story, eh? ;-) Hope to see more people come out this weekend if you can. It was a great time.

Til then,
Kristina

Kristina,

I'm not really in a position to teach knitting, either. But, I feel comfortable teaching crochet. Know what? A slee-stack would probably love to have a three-toed sock!!
