Hey, I'm from Calgary.
Have you checked around Kensington for Crafty stores?
Last time I was down there I saw a nice looking bead place, and I know there's a fabric store down there and an art supply store. If they don't have what you're looking for down in Kensington, at least it can serve up a nice bit of inspiration.
There's also a bead store in Northland Mall. I haven't been in there yet, suprisingly, so I can't say anything about prices. It looks pretty nice though.
Um, also, I know you said you don't like scrapbooking, but there's Scrapbook Sally's, which I always pass by whenever my Dad drives me home from school.. so I suppose it's somewhere near Northmount drive. Or there's Scrapbooker's Paradise up in Crowfoot. Again, I have no idea about prices.

Bead Works in Kensington is crazy expensive, but if you're into swavorski crystal and stuff like that, then it's the place for you. They also have classes, just drop by the store and pick up a schedual by the cashier.

Anthill fabrics in Kensington is closing, so everything is 50% off, still unaffordable, but there are some good finds. Move fast if you want to stock up, their inventory is dwindling fast.

The Art Supply in Kensington is good, they primairly cater to art students, prices are alright, lots of painting stuff.

Scrapbook Sallys on Northmount and Brisboise, I believe, has moderate prices, pretty good selection.

Same goes for Scrapbookers Paradise in Crowfoot, but they have a bargin bin in the back that I always like to hunt through.

I am mostly just posting because I want to keep this Calgary thread going.  I have a ton of projects I want to do once school is finished and I have more time but until then I will have to be happy lurking around the Craftster boards.

I also wanted to mention, for people who are interested t-shirt print and stenciling, you can get cheap t-shirts at a place that I think is called the Garment Warehouse or Garment Depot.  It is on the back road between the old Ikea and Pacific Plaza/Moviedome.  The t-shirts are not the best quality but they come in different colours and it is a good place to go if you are experimenting with t-shirt designs.

Did anything ever happen with the Rock & Craft show?

The Rock and Craft show is postponed still...let's not use the word Cancelled...and we are still trying to work out a plan...maybe this summer things will fly.  As it is, we are very busy with the Sunday Crafternoons happening every Sunday at the Broken City Pub.  I can't even begin to tell you how well the afternoons are going...we get new faces every week and the projects seem to get better and better.  The talent that the people attending bring with them blows me away every week!! Awesome Goodness!
So anyways...the next hosted Sunday  will be April 3rd.  It is going to be a unique Crafternoon, entailing more art than craft, and involving gig posters, bar tabs, fame, and rock bands.  I will make a clear and concise post with details later this week. Please tune back in...this is a such a good one even I can't believe it.
You guys are Craft-A-Licious.  Can't wait to see your smiling faces.
Love B-Arker

Thanks for letting us know about the Rock and Craft show. I hope that someday it does come to fruition.

I have been wanting to go to Crafternoon for a long time but I always work on Sundays. Your planned craft for the next one sounds awesome though and I may have to book the day off.

I live in the sw of calgary and you know I teach at a morning time out groups and each session there are women there that teach everything and I mean everything. So if your interested there is a group starting this tues in deervalley church near the tim hortons sign up is at 9 in the morning and I'm kidding there is alot of ladies there that teach alot of things for half the cost. April 5 and it will run every tues until school is out but just to let you know not every community has a mom's time out group and not all as what the south churchs have theres alot of cool crafts going on. Also a great group of ladies to meet and alot of room to breathe. Also Bead and Plenty More has GREAT classes and real cheap compared to others in the city. Great teachers.

Hello Everyone.
After a hectic month, I am so glad that we all made it through March alive.  Crafternoons are back on this Sunday following Extra Handsome's  mini, unavoidable hiatus.  This upcoming week, April 10th, 2005,  we will be creating HAND MADE SOFT TOY MONSTERS, compiled of scrap felt, fabric, stuffing and embroidery thread.  Once again...you need only bring your bad self...we will make sure there are an overabundance of materials.
We will be alive and kicking at the Broken City at 1pm.  Come and check it out, it's really the most fun you can have on a Sunny Sunday.

**special note:  April 17th's craft is the most awesome yet!! Bring out yer blank t-shirts cuz we're bustin' out the handmade silkscreen....

I took a sewing course at Chinook College as a refresher a couple of years ago and it was really great. My friends and I were talking about taking more courses this summer and they have introduced some affordable skills-based courses like "zippers with zip" for people who want help in certain areas.

Just cut and paste the link if you want to find out more:

On a somewhat related note: when Ant Hill Fabrics closed, a little piece of me died.

Now that all the Fanny's Fabrics are closing too, I am filled with a sense of dread as to what the future in Calgary is going to be like for people who sew  Huh
