I was starting my list (I know, a little late to be just starting, but what can I say?  I procrastinate) of winter gifts to be made today, and came upon a quandary.  A friend of mine doesn't really celebrate Christmas (Buddhist, 1st-generation Chinese) and I was wondering if it would be appropriate to save the knit hat that I already started making for New Year in January or if I should just give it to him in December as a festive-wintertime-just-because gift.  So basically it boils down to:  is Chinese New Year a gift-giving occasion?

Thanks

Well Chinese New Year is technically on January 29, 2006.  I usually receive red envelope (with money inside) from elderly for Chinese New Year and eat a bunch of candies and sweets. Cheesy

Maybe you should give the knit hat as a holiday present but not associated with any holiday.

I am also first generation Chinese.  But I celebrate christmas, thanksgiving, and American holidays.
