Thrummed mitts (first project post! :))
«
on:
October 31, 2005 04:16:40 PM »
Well, just finished these tonight so thought I would share... thrummed mittens.
Picture of the inside, which looks weird but is what makes them so warm!
Pics are kind of funny-looking as I had to squish the mitts onto my scanner, and they are very thick!
thanks for looking!

They look great! What yarn did you use? Are you supposed to do something with the inside ends? I have done nothing complicated with color so I admire these!

Very cool! Where'd you get the pattern?

Could you point me in the direction of the pattern, too?

Thanks!
I used 1 skein of Briggs and Little worsted weight wool. The colour is nicer than it looks in the pic since it also has flecks of blue and brown throughout. It is a rough yarn, but you don't notice the roughness as much with these kinds of mitts anyway, since your hand only feels the thrums. Although- I have seen these mitts made with softer wool and they were amazing, so soft and silky feeling.
The inside ends of the thrums are just left as is to insulate the hands and block the wind.

Very cool! Where'd you get the pattern?
This is the pattern I used, for 2 needles:
http://www.yarnforward.com/mitt2n.html
the only change I made was to the thrums. The puck of roving that I used has 5 strands of the roving and the pattern says to use three strands in a thrum- but I didn't, I used all 5 strands. It makes the mitts thicker and fuller.
And there is another pattern using dpns:
http://www.yarnforward.com/mitt4n.htm
I have wool and rovings from Fleece Artist for my next pair! the yarn is sooo gorgeous... I'm so excited!!

so thrumming is the inside part? I've wondered that and been way to lazy to look it up.

Yes, the thrum itself is a short piece of roving. To make the thrum, you pull a short length off the roving, stick the rhs needle into the stitch, wrap the thrum around the needle, and finish the stitch normally. On the next row you purl into the back of the thrum, to twist it, which helps it to lock it in place a bit.

thanks everyone!
At some point I'd like to try the kool-aid yarn dying on the thrums, and see what that looks like in these mitts. ***adds project to list, notes it is now in 12th place after current projects***

I love the way they look but I guess the inside worries me. I'll have to try it one day. They look very warm.
