These butterflies are made from recycled bottles and are really cool for VBS crafts as pins or magnets or gifts or ornaments or whatever. Really easy for any age.
The first one is a new butterfly I made. The second one is an old one I made when I taught VBS and it's about 7 years old (just threw it in to show how well the gluestick holds over time). And the third one is one I painted with fabric paint.

First you take some empty bottles (Clear 2 liters are best) and cut out the part of the bottle without seams and wind up with a rounded square. (on the top right of the photo below)
Then you print out a butterfly cut out a square and color it. You can color it with anything but regular markers (not sharpies) work best.
Then you rub a gluestick all over the butterfly and put the clear square over it.

When it dries you cut out the shape, bend the wings forward and Voila! a Butterfly!!!  The rounded shape of the bottle perfectly shapes the wings. Put a magnet on the back or a pinback and you're finished.

You can also tape the clear plastic over a blank butterfly and paint or use sharpies over it and make a painted butterfly or even a stained glass butterfly

I used painted butterflies all over my Christmas tree one year.
Tell me what you think!
And if you make some - I'd love to see them!!

and BTW here's my pattern if you need it (it came out a little small - you'll need to make it bigger) - or you can use one of your own

What kinda markers do you mean, exactly? You couldn't do that with magic markers, could you? I'm a little confused.

But way cool thing to do with bottles, even if I'm too stupid to figure it out.

Glad u like the butterflies : )

Gildedlilly - I used basic washable magic markers for coloring the butterflies before I glued on the bottle. But you could use colored pencils. I don't know if the glue would stick to crayons.

Hope that helps

Oh, durrrrrrh. I was making things far more complicated then I needed to. I thought you did some sort of funny transfer thing- I tend to get stupid when there's a whole huge mess of chocolate sitting in the kitchen that I'm not alowed to touch.
