Hints on how to unravel a sweater for the yarn?

I have a few loved but unused sweaters that have been sitting in my closet for years. I can't bear to give them to charity because of emotional involvement.

Until I recently discovered knitting ( I'm in the 'scarf phase' right now) I would have never thought to unravel them.

But, how do I do it salvaging the most amount of yarn possible and is there a specific way to prepare the yarn for a project or can it just be re-wound into a ball?
