I was looking in the stores for the perfect gift and saw the current trend of reed diffusers. They wanted $45 for it! I couldn't believe it! Basically, it is about 12 reeds in a neat bottle filled with essential oil. So, I found some sources on the internet to make your own, 15 exactly
Here you can get 180 12" reeds for 21.60, that's 12 cents a reed. (Bamboo for some reason won't work as well) You'll have the ability to make 15 diffusers if you use 12 sticks each. Let's assume you can get your bottles for free, (if not add 18.00 for 12 apothacary bottles) for 4 oz diffuser. They suggest using dipropylene glycol to make your essential oil last longer, a gallon will run you $20.00. I found that some companies use alcohol mixed with oils, but I don't think I would do that. It would seem it would evaporate faster. The idea is to 2 oz. DPG to 2 oz. oils, so you'll need 30 oz. of oil, let's say it will be about $25.00.

Add your oil, diffusers, and a cute label in a gift bag. Voila. That's 15 personal gifts for about $4.50 each! What a deal!

Hope that helps with all the christmas gimmes!

I can't seem to find any corks for the top that look like the ones in stores, or any cool bottles that are cheap. Know any where to get the corks and the bottles?

thanks

This question may make me sound like a complete doofus, but to make one of these, do you just put some oil in a bottle and then stick the reeds in there?

Pottery Barn has two different diffusers on their site right now.  For some reason I can't link directly to them but for anybody looking for examples they are in the Accessories/Candles section of the webiste.

Holiday Berry Diffuser - $36
Paperwhite Diffuser - $32

It would be really easy to make a pretty, simple label for each bottle w/ a little Christmas wish or something like that.  Or maybe a little hang tag instead of a label?  Hhhhmmm...I'm thinking this might be my "one for everybody" gift!  Woop!

Thanks for all the research! That's a cool idea, I'm thinking they'd be great for office co-workers.

I think most big craft stores carry an assortment of glass bottles, check out by the floral supply stuff where they keep vases.
