I just recently completed this poncho and since its my first wearable knitted item i'm pretty excited!  I got to wear it at least once before the weather turned sweltering...

The pics aren't showing for me... The links don't end with an extension like .jpg though.  Could that be the problem?

Ooo, how pretty!  That is really gorgeous.  I would love to have one.  I have to learn to knit again.  I haven't knit since I was 10, heh.

Just beautiful! I love how the stripes seem to blend into each other - how did you get it to look like that??? Like everyone else I'd love to see a pattern for this gorgeous thing...

You are all so sweet!  thanks for all the lovely comments..

This poncho was really easy to knit - I used a cool yarn that gave it the stripey blended look.  It is Plymouth Encore Colorspun worsted weight yarn - I used color 7990.  The pictures aren't that clear but the yarn is variegated and is a blend of cream, grey, rose and light pink...

All I did was cast on 88 stiches with a #8 16" circular needle - you'll want to put stitch markers every 22 stiches, so you'll know where to increase later.  also if you want a bigger or smaller neck hole, adjust according to how many stiches you cast on since the poncho is knit from the top down.  As you can see it is pretty stretchy, I can also wear it off both shoulders.  Then I just knit and increased before and after each stich marker at every other row (this creates the "seam" looking things).

When there gets to be too many stiches, switch to #8 24" circular needles.  Then because I didn't want the end bit to roll up, before I bounf off I did a few rows of garter stitch (knit one row, purl the next) - someone on the forum suggested this solution to me and it worked great.  I knit it to be about 14" long, but you can make it as long or short as you like.  The stitches were getting quite crowded so I think if I had wanted it any longer, I would have had to switch to a longer needle.

Every so often you can thread it off the needles onto a piece of string to try it on and see how you feel about the length and such - althuogh this can get tedious once you have a good amt of stitches on there.

I hope this makes sense!  It was really easy to make and only took me about 3 weeks or a month to make.

that really is a fantastic poncho! and it's your first wearable knitted piece? and you made up the pattern yourself?! i think that's amazing. i'm pretty good with the ol' needles, but i haven't been comfortable enough to firgure out my own patterns yet. you should submit that to knitty or magknits!

One more quick question: how many skeins of the plymouth yarn did it take to make the poncho?

Good question AnjanaSofia - I forgot to mention.  I used 2 and a little bit, so i you want to make it a little shorter I think you could get away with only 2 skiens, but any longer than I made it, you'll definitely need a 3rd.
I've just measured it again to give some sort of scale to my crummy pics - alon g the diagonal seam it is 15" - but keep in mind how you'd like to wear it when knitting, it will obviously hang longer if you want to wear it off one or both shoulders.

I am so flattered by your compliments and suggestions to submit!  has anyone here submitted to knitty or magknits before?

Absolutely 100% gorgeous.  I really wanted to make a poncho but I didn't find a cool pattern.  I love yours.  Thanks for posting it.  Good luck on all your future projects.

"Great work" definitely a hot item to knit. You should submit it to knitty or magknits. Can't wait to go out and get some yarn to start.... Grin
