Hello crafters,

As part of my graduate thesis project I've been researching methods of how to bring low tech into the world of craft, especially wearables and interactive projects for the home. I've been on this site many times and this community is the heart of my inspiration.

SO I currently making a DIY wearable hoodie (I will post photos up next week and a how-to shortly after) using conductive thread and/or conductive organza(it's just plain silk organza) to light a string of LEDs . It's sewable. No soldering required! The LEDS and battery pack have to be removed before you wash it but I've designed it to be modular.

I need your help/inspiration for the graphics! When the hoodie lights up, the graphics embedded on the inside will be revealed. I am playing around with the concept of what we as individuals choose to hide and reveal about ourselves depending on our context. Our clothing, the way we dress, is obviously a form of self-expression and communication but it's also a disguise, a means to hide and reveal. Blah...blah...enough grad speak.

SO. my first question is rather abstract/conceptual: What do you hide and reveal about yourself depending on your context/environment? The answers to these questions will help me design the graphics for this hoodie.

Secondly, anyone interested in participating in my research? I will send you a "kit" and instructions if you are willing to just e-mail me some jpegs of what you made with it and maybe start a conversation with you about your difficulties and experience. I would need you to make it in a few weeks after you received the kit so I can use it in my final presentation. Please offer to participate only if you have the time to this because its expensive for me to put the kit together and I really want to get this work out of the academic space and into the real world!

Thanks folks!

For those of you interested in participating, please e-mail me at syuzique@gmail.com.

I'm waiting for my supplies to get to shipped. So I will have a version made by this Wednesday hopefully and a tutorial for others that are interested but don't want to participate. For those that do, I will need photos/documentation by the end of November for my presentation in December. Also it doesn't have to be a hoodie but I would like it to be some form of wearable.

Thanks gals.

Hello All,

Sorry for the delay in getting these photos up. My thesis advisor and I came to the conclusion that the hoodie was a little to complex for individuals to make without prior experience so I had to create another project.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

This project uses conductive velcro...so when you velcro the bracelet on, the lights turn on and when it is not use the lights are automatically off.

So for those of you wishing to participate in my research, I will contact you again. Other's who are interested please e-mail me at syuzique@gmail.com.

Send any feedback or questions my way.

Please check out the previous thread if you are confused as to what I'm up too...It explains it all.

Thanks!

I don't know exactly what this is all about, but those wristbands are awesome! What the heck is conductive velcro and how did you do that??? Nice!!! I want one!  Grin
