My sister and I are planning a birthday party for our friend, who decided he wanted a presidents and first ladies theme (yeah, i dont know why either) and we are looking for ways to enhance the theme and encourage people to dress up... any suggestions? (i know, this is a hard one, which is why i am turning to the experts for help Wink)

I would probably make some kewl looking red/white & blu party invites with a pic of me and someone else already in costume/white wig n' all as prez and 1st lady right on the cover. And find some colonial looking building/background for photo shoot. Unique theme!

thats a good idea, thanks.... there are tons of nice buildings on campus to use, and pics of us dressed up might encourage others to dress up... and we'll probably just send e-invites, but that would still work out really well. plus it will allow me to exercise my photoshop obsession some more... bwahaha

Really interesting idea!

A decor idea: red, white and blue bunting like at party conventions.

Red carpet at entrance leading in to party room.

Balloon drop - you know you want to do it! OK, that might be going a little overboard!  Cheesy

Old election posters for decorations - Nixon, I like Ike, etc.

Favors - campaign buttons, some kind of "ballots", something with the presidential seal on it. White house cupcakes?

Food:
Watergate salad: http://www.ochef.com/337.htm
Reagan's jelly beans
Bush Sr.'s broccoli
Bill Clinton's hamburgers
Bush Jr.'s pretzels
Carter's peanuts

Oh, now I wish I were going!! Yes, I am a politics geek...

that sounds neat- guys just need to wear a suit jacket and girls could wear their tackiest cocktail dress or sweater set. maybe you could pair your guests up as presidential couples, or you could get every one to refer to each other as their presidential counterparts. left-over fourth of july decorations and napkins could be used as decorations. you could play 'pin the tail on the donkey (ass/ president)'.

Dont ferget to serve Dolly Madison cakes!

In the invitations you could include an email to RSVP so they can tell you which pres couple their picking...folks who dont pick get a Pres drawn randomly and will be asked to dress appropriately.

Plan a gathering before the party at/with a friendly (read cheap or free) local theatre company that will loan costumes...it helps folks with the costuming conundrum and builds enthusiasm

yes! you should have some secret service agents! what about giving out some awards- eg; 'most likely to have an affair with an intern', 'most likely to leak to the press' etc.

You could get some of those President/First Lady paper doll books and incorporate them somehow...placecard s?  Name tags?  Serve cherries and milk (Zachary Taylor's fatal dessert) and offer folks either lemonade (Lucy Hayes was a Temperance supporter and served no alcohol in the White House) or vodka (Betty Ford, duh.) You could offer tiny Teddy (Roosevelt) Bears as favors.  You could even offer a copy of Mo Rocca's "All the President's Pets" as a prize for the best dressed.
