I have a friend that wants to get into punk music, and I wanna give her a cool mix. I want to use songs that cheer you up, that make you happy, that you can relax to. just some fun, meaningful, posi stuff, to listen to while we're chilling, if you know what I mean  Wink
off the top of my head, I can think of:
the ramones -sitting in my room/basically anything by them Smiley
the dead boys - sonic reducer
op ivy - sound system

dead milkmen
the clash
the adicts
against me!

can anyone think of some other stuff?

freedom is given, speak how you feel
I have no freedom, how do you feel?
they can lie to my face, but not to my heart
if we stand together, it'll just be the start

urh punk is suppose to having meaning behind it not just bc someone wants to "get in to it" sorry for bitching, im not trying to start any online drama, i dont know your friend or you maybe im wrong but this whole scene is getting out of control.

don't forget the who and sex pistols- you might also like the libertines, black rebel motorcycle gang and nick cave and the bad seeds/ the birthday party- they're not punk but they share the same sentiment.

i don't think there's any harm in wanting to expand your musical horizons, personally.
you may or may not consider these bands 'punk', but off the top of my head, here are a few suggestions of stuff your friend might like:

the pogues
billy talent
the buzzcocks
dead kennedys
bad brains
iggy pop
bouncing souls

It's been a while since my punk phase (which was an awesome phase) but if your friend wants to get into punk music, maybe you could make her a chronological CD of "punk history" or something.
Maybe along these lines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_punk_rock

Maybe start with the New York Dolls and work your way to Bad Religion.

I think it is great that her friend is interested in learning about punk. I also think that it is kind of funny that you talk about the scene getting out of control.  How is your interest any different?  You are 17 years old you were not even born when punk was around.

As far music goes maybe some misfits, x ray spex, wire, slits, X, television,  the fall, the damned.  Not all necessarily true punk.

Who cares about the reason why someone wants to get into punk? It's not like punk's anything new and/ or exclusive. It's great music, and I like sharing things I think are great with other people, that's why Craftster is so great. The word "great" is starting to look funny to me now. Great! And now for some great bands:
Subhumans                                             The Clash
The Business (older stuff)                         Citizen Fish
Peter and the Test Tube Babies                 Johnny Cash
Minor Threat                                            Fugazi
Sham 69                                                Total Chaos
Motorhead                                             Fifteen
Anti Nowhere League                              Pennywise
Buzzcocks                                               NoFx
Generation X                                          The Drive By Truckers
DI                                                          Vandals
Cyndi Lauper                                          Loretta Lynn
... I guess it all depends on what you consider "punk". I think the Dave Clark Five were pretty f'n punk ("Bits and Pieces"- so angry!), so are the Drive By Truckers( in a southern rock sort of way), look in your mom's folk rock record collection and find Janis Ian- read the words to "Society's Child" or "At Seventeen" or "Hair of Spun Gold" and try to tell me that's not punk! Okay, it's not punk, but I think you get my point- sometimes it's the music, and sometimes it's the attitude- I know I'll get a lot of crap for saying that, but no one is an expert on punk (including myself- all of this is just an opinion), no matter how dumb they try to make you feel for not being as much of a punk or knowing as much about punk as them. Punk is anything you want it to be. DIY is punk.

How about:
7 Seconds (who I think of as the kings of positive punk)
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
Dropkick Murphys
Social Distortion
Youth Brigade
Lars Frederiksen & the bastards
Roger Miret & the Disasters
The Cramps
Swingin Utters
Tiger Army

That's all I can think of now.  My brain is tired.
