i'm trying to make a hoodie out of an old sweatshirt. i cut a straight line up the front, & sewed in a zipper. the problem is, when it's zipped up, the zipper area has these really ugly bulges that stick out from my gut! yargh! i have a feeling it has something to do with the sweatshirt fabric stretching as i sew the zipper on, but i'm not really sure what to do about this.

I'm about to attach a zipper to a hoodie i made out of flannel.... now im freakin! I think it might have to do with how thick the zipper is too maybe? cos those invisible zips are pretty thin and others are pretty thick...i have no idea...I'll wait around for an answer with you  Grin

I have a store bought hoodie that does the same exact thing when zipped up.  It's awful!

All I can figure is that the fabric (?) that's attached to the zipper is too thick, so it bends in odd directions instead of going with the flow.

If all else fails, hide.  It works for bunnies.

You have to be careful not to stretch the fabric when applying a zipper.  I usually baste the zipper on, or use fusible tape to stabilize the edge before I sew a zipper onto stretchy fabric.  HTH!
