It might help to cut a small piece of cloth the same shape at the finished shrug, and seam it like the knitted one will be. Part of the top ribbing ends up being the front edges, and the other part is rolled over like a collar. You could probably leave the middle stitches on holders when you bind off the rest, and use that as the lower couple inches of your hood.

I followed the shape for the circular shrug, but not the exact pattern to make this shrug:

 I fell in love with your shrug about a week ago, and I'm basing my shrug on yours. I like the shorter length, and the mesh stitch I'm using is somewhat similar.
