i made recyclng bins for my mom for mother's day. i bought the bins at target and drew what goes in each bin on the lid. cans, plastic, cardboard. i made the yellow parts kind of offset from the lines to make it look screenprinted and poppy. she loved them. several hours later, she called from the kitchen, "do they have any for newspapers?" and i said, "um... they're... the same..." and she goes, "no, you know, one for newspapers. do they make those?" and i said, "you know i DREW that stuff, right?" and then she freaked out, jumping up and down and clapping and cheering. i guess not realizing that they didn't come that way is a pretty good compliment. yeah? yeah. weeee!

Travis, those are so amazing. Very well done. As I've said many times before, you're extremely talented. You're mother sounds so adorable, too. Obviously if she was fooled, you're good. And also, you were amazing the other night... and morning.

thanks, ashley. now, is this the forum to air personal affairs? yes. clearly it IS. nobody minds, right, everybody? anyway, i'm sorry i was out of pineapple juice. i promised you PINEAPPLE JUICE. next time. you're pretty.

oh, i forgot to mention that i used sharpie on these. i don't usually like using sharpie, since they eventually turn to crap (from the acid, i believe), but the color scheme was super nice and target didn't have a good selection of opaque paint pens (my preferred choice).

yeah, i wasn't going to be the one to admit that i was snooping- but i was thinking that too!
not that long-distance isn't possible, but long-distance with pineapple juice?! might be asking too much.

Hmmm, I hope the sharpie doesn't get all gross over time. Then your lovely design will be all ruined and we don't want that. There, that was my attempt to bring it back to the crafts for you because you, mister, are the one to blame for it not being about the crafts. And, Travis, dear, how on earth did you know I like pineapple juice???

Awesome bins, I desperately need one for paper waste at the moment but I'm a little worried the sharpie'll go funny after a while too, though, But then bins in general go yucky after a while...

it takes a SUPER long time for sharpies to crap out, from what i hear. for stuff that supposedly won't fade for like... ever, i recommend the acrylic-based opaque paint pens made by Painters (the word is written in rainbow colors). i use them in paintings. i LOVE them. the medium tip is wider than a regular sharpie, and the fine tip is .... maybe just a little less wide than a regular sharpie. and they come in all sorts of colors. i know that you can find them at hobby lobby, and i've even seen them at target (but only in black).

p.s. i don't know. it's just like i could tell that you played flute in band back in the day. it's my seventh sense.

Why not just sell it as an art paper. You could silkscreen them or have them silkscreened. People pay beaucoup bucks for stuff like that especially if they are original prints. Hey, you can even get fabric printed. There is a place in NYC (will have to do some research to find the name) that does custom printing on fabric Minimum is 5 yards. It is not totally cheap but it is not unreasonable either for original fabric.  You could even make postcards out of it, or even wallpaper. The possibilities are endless. You already have a definitve style and a following. It just depends on what direction you want to take. Go get 'em slugger!

Travis, a tip of my hat to you.  What a fabulous idea/gift. Your mom must be proud! Just want you to know I really enjoy your creativity and thoughtfulness.  Now if I just lived in Texas I'd come and see your band.  Ah, well.  So it goes.

If you'd like advice from a not-so-successful web store owner, I'd say, try designing large bin stickers!

You can print them up like at a copy shop or sumthin, then sell them via your website for a few $$'s. If they are super successful, try a wholesale print shop after that.*
Configure them in different sizes for different bins.
This would also solve the sharpie decay issue, which unfortunately, happens rather fast-ish on the plastic that I've used them on, like 2-3 years.
They'd also be cheap to ship, certainly cheaper than trying to mail off a bin lid, and then they could be fastened to other surfaces as well........

And if you do go this route, I'd like to be first in line to order said stickers.

And while I've not tried it, I do hear goodish things about cafepress-I know there are several threads on this elsewhere in craftster......

*because of Day Job, I know several sources if you're interested.  The founder of our company had his friends print up a giant red sticker with the white letters 'BUSH' that's designed to go under the 'STOP' on a stopsign and he handed them out to everyone in town.....clever eh?  Too bad the cops don't agree........

I didn't read through the entire thread but once the sharpie problem came up i immediately thought of a solution

to keep the sharpie work from going gross overtime, you could draw your design like usual then take it over to kinkos and get it color copied (twice)

then you can file both the original and copied design in case mom spilled some crap on the paper and ruined it or something happened to the copied design.

also the copy would look just as it did they day you made it  Grin

you could also use your copy to make some cool bins for other people

you are so awesome! I love those!  I have been using cardboard boxes (leftover from the last time I moved) and put in plastic bags from random stores.  We only know what goes in each box by looking - and memory.  I'm going to make something like yours (as soon as we move again)!!  Maybe we'll actually have pick-up recycling in our new neighborhood!  As it is, we take our recycling down to the local Farmer's Market ourselves.

I eventually want to get some kind of containers to separate them in, and this is a great idea.
