Craft Challenge #8 - $10 Hardware Handiwork - Due December 5 to December 9 (2005)

When you're walking up and down the aisles of the hardware store looking for something totally practical, do you find  yourself daydreaming about the crafty-ness you could make out the things you see?

This challenge is to spend $10.00 or less (or the equivalent in the country you live in) on items from a hardware store and to make something totally clever and unexpected.

The focal point of your project should be the hardware store items but other things can be added like traditional crafting supplies and other embellishments and these don't have to be a part of the $10.00 limit.

Official Rules:

  • Post your craft during the period of December 5 to December 9. No sooner. No later.
Instructions for exactly how to post your entry will be available on December 5.
  • Voting will happen from December 10 to December 14
  • Each participant can enter ONE project

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original and has never been posted on Craftster or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, then just give credit to that project.

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the winners get:

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog

... plus these prizes:

The top five vote-getters will get a copy of the new book 52 Projects : Random Acts of Everyday Creativity donated by the author Jeffrey Yamaguchi from the blog 52Projects.com.

Jeffrey Yamaguchi extends an invitation to indulge one's inner artist by committing yourself to one creative project a week for 52 weeks. 52 Projects chronicles the author's artistic journey over the course of one year and how it changed his life-and also offers 52 jumping-off points for the reader's own creative inspiration.

The first place winner will also get a copy of the new book Super Crafty : Over 75 Amazing How-to Projects! donated by one of the book's authors Susan Beal from the website SusanStars.com.

The crafts scene is thriving as Gens X and Y embrace hobbies (rejected as too middlebrow by their baby boomer parents) in order to create something beautiful, functional, and unique. With its sleek design and edgy tone, Super Crafty is the ultimate hipsters craft guide, with a wide array of accessible projects suitable for all skill levels. The book offers dozens of projects for the home (Easy Etched Glass), wardrobe (One-Afternoon Skirt), body (Flirty Floral Pasties), family pet (Gretas Tail Warmer), and more. Organized by genre, each chapter uses a rating system to indicate difficulty, cost of materials, and age-appropriateness. "101" sections offer basic instruction in sewing, working with vinyl, jewelry making, and other crafts. A resource guide helps locate supplies, tools, and further inspiration. The authors also contribute thoughtful pieces on the underlying aspects of craft, from activism to therapy, as well as lighthearted vignettes on crafting disasters and favorite art supplies.

So who's up for a challenge?!

Feel free to post any questions or comments you have here too but note that I will delete them once submissions come in to keep this thread tidy.
