Hi, I'm a long time lurker first time poster.
I would like to knit knitty’s hallowig for my sister’s birthday.  She has hinted that she would love one and really thought I could do it.

The patterns says to cast on 96 stitches and then knit the following pattern

Row 1 [RS]: K3, [p2, k2] to last st, k1.
Row 2 [WS]: P3, [k2, p2] to last st, p1.

Row 2 doesn’t make sense to me if I start it by purling three and then work the rib I end with knit 2 purl 1.  It just doesn’t make any sense to me.

but if on row one you ended with k3,  you should end with p3 on row 2.

shouldn't you?
did you cast on the right # of stitches?

If you've cast on 96 as they say, and followed the pattern, your last stitches should look like this:
92. P
93. P
94. K
95. K
96. K ......... because they said to end on a knit stitch (do the ribbing to the last stitch, then k1)

So now when you start going the other way on the next row, your first 3 stitches will be P3, as they say, and then you're off and running again on the ribbing........k2, p2 this time. Same deal at the end of that row, only you'll have 3 purls.

Hope that helps!  Smiley
