Okay, so my "comfy" boyfriend, is in a position where he has to wear "nice" clothes everyday.  No more old t-shirts, and short, no more windbreaker pants etc.  Now the things he used to wear when he was "dressed-up"  (khaki's and a polo shirt) are for "casual Friday"  The guy only had 3 ties in his closet before now.  Since money isn't a prevalent thing, we tried raiding the local thrift store to find fun, funky tie but most of  the ones we found were "expensive".  $10 or more for a thrift-store tie? I don't think so.   Granted we did walk out with 5 (which almost tripled his collection), but still.
So for a present, I took a half-yard left-over I had from another project, and made this for him:

Tie on him:

*excuse his expression. It was earlier in the morning, and he didn't want to have his picture taken.  Roll Eyes silly boy!

Did you buy a pattern or make your own?

Tofuttibreak, I bought one at the thrift store that had a stain on it, for a quarter.  Ripped the seams out, and used that as my pattern. Which works out really well. I now have pattern that I can use over and over again. However, I can measure the pieces if you'd like.

Thanks Lostlipgloss, for the tip, I'll definitely check the dollar stores!

AmericanDemockracy, I've seen a few patterns for ties, and you're right they do look difficult.  However, they're not that bad. It really helped me to take one apart and see how it was put together.

Thanks, I'll have to try that!
I've heard of other people doing that, but I didn't know how complicated it would be.
I've been wanting to sew some ties forever!

I like it!  The fabric you used is really stellar.
I made my boyfriend a checkered tie about a month ago, because he has to wear one for school.  He loves it!  They're fun to make, too, aren't they?

Well, like I told someone else, I found a stained on at the Thrift Store for a quarter, and ripped it apart. However, there is a tutorial somwhere here on craftster. I'll have to see if I can find it.

edit: The tutorial is here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=42770.0  The instructions may look a little hairy, but it's fairly simple to do.

If you try it, I'd love to see the results! And if you need help, ask away.
