So... I'm the typical stupid teenager, you see, planning all my "when I turn 18" things.

I really, really, *really* want my tongue pierced. However! I am a big wimpy pansy girl. I just want to know, how much DOES it hurt, and is it really normal for it to swell?

And, if you've done it... how long have you kept it in? Or did you remove it for some reason?

Aaaand how much did it cost?

Roar! You thar! Share your knowledge.

on my first tongue peircing i spent 35$ and for me the intial feeling was not pain, but its different for everyone. afterwards the swelling was annoying and the pain of trying to talk hurts cause it strains your tongue, and plus you sound stupid from the lisp. i had that one for a long time then i took it out. my second time i got 2 tongue rings which is called snake bites. that one hurt cause the first one was in then he took a couple minutes to do the second one and by that time my first one was swelling already. but its different for everyone, for me NO intial pain. but afterwards lots of ice and slurpies!!!

I had my tongue pierced when I was 17 and still have it nine years later.  Having it pierced was uncomfortable, but all the pain came from having my tongue clamped, the needle itself didn't hurt.  It was swollen for a week after and I couldn't eat solid food, or talk normally for the whole time.  I got it done during the christmas break so I didn't have to worry about classmates making fun of me - just family.

If you do get your tongue pierced, make sure you go and get a shorter barbell after it has healed.  I didn't change mine for six years until I bit it one day and chipped a tooth.  And if you ever put acrylic balls on, check them frequently because the threading wears down and it can fall off.

Most important of all - got to a reputable piercer and take care of it while healing.  Nothing sucks more than an irritated piercing.

Good Luck!!

Thank you both for your replies! I'm very thankful to hear that it's not as painful as it seemed when I saw it done in a video once. Bleh...

i'm the only pweson i know who's tongue piercing hurt like a !@#$%^&!  everyone else i know said it hurt less than getting their ears pierced. i think the guy who did mine might have hit a nerve, cause i almost passed out. and i have a really high tolerance for pain. lol.  anyway make sure you wont need to be understood for about a week. the swealing makes you unable to talk that well. and make sure you have yogurt and other "drinkable" foods, lol. i couldnt really chew or eat hard foods for a week. anyway, after that is was great! my parents hadnt wanted me to do it and i pulled the "haha, i'm 18, i'm rebelling" thing and i was quite happy. lol

AND the metal balls can wear the enamel off you teeth, which is baaad, so as soon as you can get a plastic or...there's something else other than metal you can get..i forget.

oh and slimy older guys might come up and ask "sooo... have you used that thing for its original purpose?" *ooze ooze*  anyway that happened to me, lol.

Getting my ears pierced didn't hurt at all. I didn't even feel it. So if tongue piercings hurt less, that would be like... it hurts negatively. Maybe it'll loop back around to pain! =P  (No, that didn't make sense at all.)

And gross to the "original purpose" thing. One time a friend licked my arm and I screamed because it felt really weird... because he had a vibrating tongue.. not ring... bar? Thing? Anyway yeah, vibrating. EEP.

I shall dedicate the next year of my life to coming up with a smart-ass reply to such suggestions!
