My family is doing Alice in Wonderland this year too...wonder why so popular all of a sudden?

I am going as the Mad Hatter, one daughter will be Alice and the other with be the Queen of Hearts. It's gonna be adorable! My hubby is a party pooper but I will prob get him some ears so he won't feel too left out. Going this week to pick up the patterns.

I'm going to dress up as the woman in the right foreground of Seurat's "Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte"

I found the perfect shirt for it today, and I'm planning to make the bustled skirt.  I found a cheap parasol online.

I'm stuck on a few details:
How do I make the little top hat?
Should I cover everything (and my skin) in dots for authenticity, or is that overkill?
Would you recognize it?

Also: if anyone has a light purple flat sheet, preferably with some kind of subtle ditzy floral or dot pattern, I will buy it off you!!!!  PM me!

How do I make the little top hat?

There is a great tutorial I came across on ThreadBanger for making your own top hat. You could apply this method to any size or style top hat you want.

I made one for my daughter, who at 3 years old wants to be Willy Wonka for Halloween this year. It's the old school Gene Wilder Willy Wonka, not Johnny Depp. I based the one I made her on this tutorial and covered it with orange felt. I'll be posting the finished costume next week.

The shape of the hat looks a bit like a fedora, you could find one at any hat or costume shop, and then add in a pink carnation or some other sort of flower.

I think the dots might be a little overkill, but the concept is really interesting.  I think that ultimately it might take away from your desired effect.  I wonder if there would be some other (or similar) way you could come up with to cover your skin to look as if it were painted?

I think that any art fiend would recognize it almost immediately.  Have you thought about having someone dress up as the male counterpart to go with you?

I'll be doing a French Revolutionary this year!  Now I just need to quit being lazy and actually start on it.  Smiley
