I was hoping, since the Jayne hat thread got to be so long, that there would be someone to help me out here. I love my Jayne hat, but I'm also obsessed with a couple other pieces from Firefly, but mostly the sweater that Wash wears in Out of Gas, because Wash is awesome and my boyfriend needs a Wash sweater.

I've only been able to track down a couple screenshots of the thing, unfortunately. This is the clearest one: http://still-flying.net/images/outofgas/index.php?p=outofgas340.jpg&pg=6 The closest pattern I could find to it was this one: http://www.knitting-crochet.com/menpuloveiriknit.html but Wash's cables are different, and it looks like it's done in garter stitch. I've never actually made a sweater before, but I love this one and I usually can't stand cabled patterns (horrible childhood flashbacks  Tongue) Does anyone have any ideas?

Even if no one can help me out on this, I'd love to make a couple other things from the show, including River's gorgeous vest (that's crochet, right?) and some of Jayne's stencilled shirts.

space shows tend to have the coolest clothes.  i basically wanted everything the blonde chick wore on andromeda.  for the wash sweater, what about just knitting the body in a lose garter stich, and then crochet/knit some thin strips and stich them on for the cables?

Wow, it's really exciting that you are looking to make things from the show.  A lot of people seemed to have bought some of the pieces (mostly chinese coats and flight suits) to wear to cons and such.  You have inspired me to try to find something that looks like that vest.  I'll post again if I find anything good.

Hmm.  That's not garter stitch on Wash's sweater, the reverse stockinette is just stretched out a little so it looks kinda like garter stitch.  If it were garter stitch the cables would blend in to the knit rows of the background.  As for matching the cable pattern, you could get some graph paper and copy it off the picture.  Having a boyfriend who could impersonate Wash might be good incentive for overcoming that childhood trauma Wink.
I think River's vest is actually knit, but in a large gauge with a non-stretchy yarn like cotton.  You can tell because there are single threads between some of the stitches rather than the little chains that would come from crochet.  It looks like it's knit from the back out, with the knit rows going  vertically in the front.  If you could find a good picture of the back it might be easier to puzzle it out.

Personally, I really liked Simon's sweater from the movie.  It was definitely machine knit, though.

River's vest looked knitted from the front, but this view looks crocheted almost for certain.

i remember liking the shawl that "Saffron" was wearing in "Our Mrs. Reynolds."  I can't really find a very good picture of it: these are the best ones.

You're right.  You can definitely see it in the ridges on the star.  It looks like a couple of star motifs with some mesh and then a few rows of shell stitches at the bottom and front edges.

Here is the best shot I could find on that site of the back, but I'll put the DVD in later tonight and see if I can get a better screenap off that. http://still-flying.net/images/objectsinspace/index.php?p=objects062.jpg&pg=0

I forgot about Saffron's shawl. It's beautiful. I'll get a couple caps of that too. I'm also trying to find a picture from Serenity (the movie, not the episode) of this one shirt that Zoe wears. It's not knit, but it was an interesting pattern and would make a pretty sweater. It was a dark pink color with ribbing through the body and up to her boobs, where it was flat. It had a V neck and a big collar that she wore flipped up. Did anyone else notice that? It was just about the most feminine thing I've ever seen Zoe wear.

I did notice that top that Zoe wore.  I remember thinking "ohhhh, new futuristic collars.  Is this what a bigger budget gets ya?"

I also love this sweater that River wears-

I can't wait until the movie DVD comes out, I remember Inara wearing this *great* shawl that I want to try and duplicate. Oh, well. Good excuse to see it again in theatres, I suppose.

The cable pattern on the Wash sweater sort of reminds me of the Saxon Braid cable that keeps popping up around here, only a little wider and more open. (A close approximation is found on knitty, here.) Perhaps a better knitter than I can do something with that.
