Nun's stitch is an edging stitch.  As I understand it, the nuns earned money for the convents by sewing for the wealthy ladies and they used this stitch for edging the ladies' fine linens and undergarments. 

Here's a link to a pretty bookmark that has nun's stitch around the edge.  There is a diagram of the stitch toward the bottom of that page.
