my favorite olive green linen pants (my mainstay work pants) got a small rip right on the front of the thigh.  i know there are those iron on patches for the inside-do they show much?  is there a better way?

You can make it so that the patch doesn't show at all - if it's a rip rather than a hole.  But the patch is a much heavier/stiffer fabric than linen pants usually are, so you might see the outline of the patch as an area where your pants don't act normal.
it might be better to just sew them up, with maybe some decorative embroidery over the repair
