This is my version:

Top View


Side View

I used KnitPicks Wool of the Andes and knit the smaller size.
It took probably a total of 4 hours, and it was pretty simple.
The pattern looks pretty complex (to me at least), but it was my first lace object and I didn't have any trouble.

i totally wanted to do this a bit ago but i just can't for the life of me understand how it starts.  do i just knit the two first rounds?

Yes, the chart shows 1 knit stitch, so you muliply that by 8.
You knit 8 stitches for the first two rounds.

Your hat looks beautiful!  The blue that you used is really nice and your lace looks flawless.   I love this pattern, it is so pretty.   I knit this pattern as my first lace project too.  As soon as I saw the pattern I grabbed the closest yarn and needles and had to try it.  I think that it is much easier then it looks.
