kinda late to post this...but the whole dishwasher thing does work really really well....except for when your mom goes into the kitchen and asks why there are flip flops in the dish washer...

I just use regular laundry detergent and scrub the ugly brown spots away with an old toothbrush or something to the same effect. For white ones I add bleach to the detergent and it works marvelous for me. My sister uses baby wipes to clean hers, you might could try that if you have any???
i also take an old toothbrush and scrub at them a little. it works great on my plain flip flops, but i dont know if it would wear off the designs of my patterned ones! just keep rinsing them as you scrub do get all that dirty water off so you dont keep scrubbing it in again. Cheesy

i use those clorox sanitary wipe things for your bathroom... they work really well, ive had a wonderful pair of flip flops since like 7th grade(4yrs) and i love them and they still fit(ill never grow) but i cant find ones that awesome- so i do that... also, if you turn the dishwasher on and dont let your parents see whats in it as an added bonus they think your doing chores around the house... till they find out your not.. Cheesy
