I am looking to make some 3d realistic animals, but am in need of some guidance.  I am not looking to work with pony beads and those flat key chain/lanyard things.  I want to make something like this:

I am a very visual and hands on person and I am having trouble with 1) figuring out what stitches are used and 2) how the whole "3d" thing actually works.  How to make animal "skin" and get it to lay in the right shape.

Is the animal strictly beaded?  I've seen artist out there where they use mixed media, combining fabric and wire as a frame and beading on top of that.  The question is "how"?

I've tried youtube and really only come up with "cutesy" beaded animals.  Glass bead animals and flat stitched animals.  Nothing realistic looking.
