I am looking for a pattern to knit an armadillo.  3-d not charted.  I'll buy it if need be, but I need an armadillo.

I'd like an armadillo too...  I'd just sew it though, because I can't knit.  >__<  Aren't armadillos the cutest?!  Good luck to you in finding a pattern!

Huh.... I wonder if you could adapt another critter, like a pig or something with a plausible face.  It seems to me that if you did a welted pattern (or ribbing, depending on which way you were knitting) around his torso, you might get a pretty decent armadillo.

Line him up in a collection of his armadillo buddies, and I bet he would fit right in.

For more information on welting, see Mary Thomas's Book of Knitting Patterns.  ISBN 0-486-22818-5

I think someone adapted a knitted rabbit, I found a picture when I googled, but they didn't really discuss how they did it.  Being my lazy self, I was just hoping there was a pattern already out there.

The rabbit adaptation you are refering to is on this blog: http://www.poormissfinch.com/index.php?id=D20050908.  It's pretty cute.

Hey, that's that bunny that's just made out of a knitted square!  Looks like all they really did was knit it in reverse stockinette with garter stitch where the body is and maybe regular stockinette where the head and front feet go, and added I-cord for the tail.

That's what I was thinking, too. The pig in the World of Knitted Toys might work.

This is too weird as I just purchased a 1979 book called "Wild Knitting" at a yard sale today & what does it have but a pattern for a knitted armadillo ..... wrap. I will gladly scan & share the pattern with those of you who would like it. I know it's not a stuffed armadillo but maybe having the pattern you could just modify it and add an underside. Or you could just make the wrap!

The book is too wacky! There are some really cute things & some things that just scream late 70's! It has patterns for knitted cigarettes & a lighter, really cute ballet slipper socks & duck feet socks & some HIDEOUS sweaters!! My personal fave is the hat that looks like the sky with clouds done in fair isle & a huge yellow pom pom for the sun!!

It also has a really comprehensive stitch dictionary & the basic technique directions are well written & easy to follow. It was a steal for $.50!!!!

If you save the larger image to your computer you should be able to use paint or photoshop to size it for printing. If you still have trouble let me know & I will resize it and email it to you.
